The equality watchdog has set out sweeping new guidance on how to apply equality protections for the first time in more than a decade, with a focus on how transgender people should be treated.
The 300-page document, seen by The Times but not yet published, was prompted by a Supreme Court judgment in April that ruled the terms “sex” and “woman” in the Equality Act referred to biological sex.
Here we outline the key elements.
Single-sex spaces
The most significant change is a departure from previous interpretations that transgender people should generally be treated in line with their gender identity in single-sex settings such as changing rooms or hospital wards.
Previously it was thought that excluding a transgender woman from a single-sex setting could amount to discrimination.
The new guidance states clearly that trans people may be excluded from single-sex spaces that do not correspond to their biological sex when it is a “proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim”, such as protecting privacy, dignity or safety.
Reflecting the Supreme Court ruling, the guidance said that for the purposes of the Equality Act “a person’s sex remains their biological sex, whether they have a GRC [gender recognition certificate] or not”. like, in what universe is the response to "there are a great deal more intellectual disabilities than previously thought" the idea that the policy solution is to keep them from being scientists
the thing which gives the game away on scientific racism is that if we discovered an island where everyone was gravely intellectually disabled and some guy said, "great, let's make them our slaves," we would beat him to death with hammers but if you say that about actual people it's taken seriously

I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

That American politics went off the rails after Barack Obama and British ethnonationalism has reared its head after Rishi Sunak is the real tell about how committed some people are to integration and post racial politics.
A country where Sadiq Khan can lead London, Humza Yousaf can lead Scotland, and Rishi Sunak can lead Britain is a country where the racists had *lost*. So much of this vicious bile has come directly after that and almost no one seems to draw the connection

I disagree. It’s central to the country’s bad vibes that we cut state support for the working poor and have compensated for that, poorly, by shunting some of the costs onto businesses and the rest onto to telling the people who have lost out “life’s tough, adapt”.
Weird thing: the UK minimum wage has risen against inflation for years. It's now really high. Millions of people are earning more than they were as a direct result of this policy. And the impact on the vibes of the country is… entirely absent?

So, here's the problem I have with all this outrage over Trump's comments about Khashoggi: it feels performative. Liberals who are mad at Trump over his comments spent a lot of time justifying Biden's meeting with the same murderer making realpolitik excuses that were identical to "things happen."
