In 1946 Freddy Fly yelled “Flame on!” so loud that Johnny Storm heard it fifteen years later.
Four panels from the Freddy the Firefly story published in MAD HATTER #1. This is a funny animal/superhero comic in which Freddy Fly shouts “Flame on!” and transforms into Firefly (which just Freddy engulfed in flames). It’s very Human Torch but from 1946

You inspired me to look up who invented the firehouse pole, and you are so right. This is legitimately fascinating.
Dekalb Walcott, former chief of Chicago’s 23rd Battalion, says that in Kenyon’s day, there was a competitiveness between firehouses to arrive first at a blaze—and a particular need for newly formed all-black firehouses to prove themselves. “There was an esprit de corps that came from beating other companies to a fire,” says Walcott.
