JW: Mark of the Vampire (1935). Tod Browning’s horror thriller - or is it? Browning was a notorious sleight of hand vaudevillean and much of his film work traded on sideshows, illusion and deception. This is no exception given in a story where vampires are picking off the Borotyn family. #Filmsky 🧵
Poster for Mark of the Vampire (1935). Lugosi is depicted on the left side in famous Dracula pose facing Elizabeth Allan and Henry Wadsworth. The title of the film is in bright red, cast names in yellow. Carroll Borland’s face looms between the other figures.

It’s a shame the full concert isn’t available commercially or online any more. Perhaps it’s a rights issue.

From the reactions of the band, I’d guess they were well practiced at working in these conditions. Amazing stuff.

Record this and save it for Christmas! One of my favourite discoveries of the past few years.

I’m so hopeless with music that I couldn’t tell they were the same piece!

And, on the other channel, The Sweeney.

I’ve got a pull-up one. It’s hopeless.

That’s a very flat projector screen.

Raoul Walsh's 1930 western THE BIG TRAIL (available to stream on C5 for the next month) is notable for two reasons. Firstly, it was shot in a then brand new Widescreen format, 70mm Grandeur, and Walsh makes incredible use of every inch of the frame. There's so much going on, with no... /1
Still from THE BIG TRAIL showing how director Raoul Walsh made effective use of his 70mm Grandeur frame. Still from THE BIG TRAIL showing how director Raoul Walsh made effective use of his 70mm Grandeur frame.

Unexpected rabbit hole today is discovering that "Phwoar!" was first recorded by the dictionary in 1976, and 1972's Carry On Matron may be its first film appearance.

I thought I'd found an earlier 60s TV use, but it seems "Phwoar!" is firmly a 70s phenomenon.

It’s decent. The first 15 minutes or so are hit and miss and a bit irritating but that’s really just compressed background for the rest of the story.

The first console to appear in Italian cinema was (probably) the Seleco-Zanussi Gun-o-tronic, showing up in 1976 Il Signor Robinson (Mr. Robinson).
The Gun-o-tronic was the official gun accessory for the Ping-o-tronic, an early Italian Odyssey clone released around early 1975.

NICHOLAS AND ALEXANDRA (1971)

Franklin J. Schaffner's follow-up to PATTON

3 hour Tsar epic

Doesn't burrow into the imagination like DOCTOR ZHIVAGO. Schaffner more of a literalist

Oscar-winning design and costume

Pretty on the outside. Moments of power and banal bloat on the inside

Britain was hugely influential in the creation of the new wave of science fiction. But unlike America, virtually none of these texts made it to the screen. THE FINAL PROGRAMME is one of the very few exceptions.

Surprised to find recently that this film’s reputation seems to have slipped in recent years. Not seen it for a while but it still looked like one of the great films the last time I did.

First watch: despite being a huge fan of It's a Wonderful Life, I haven't seen enough Frank Capra. Mr Smith Goes to Washington has a pre-war James Stewart perfectly cast as the titular Smith, a callow beanpole of a boy scout leader, handpicked by corrupt politicians to be a senatorial Yes Man. 1/3

It’s always been a 15 it is quite sweary in parts, probably more than a 12 would allow.

With you on Rocky Horror though. Goldeneye had to be trimmed on original release to get a 12. Maybe the version on re-issue has extra head-butts?

As a Bluesky user in good standing obviously I love TheModernHouse.com. The best bit is working out where the TV normally sits, which they've removed for the pictures. Bonus points here for proving it with an accidental glimpse in the fourth pic

It's terrifying someone can go this far down the rabbit hole, but if your own daughter has died of a treatable cancer because you convinced her to have coffee enemas instead of chemo, I guess staying in the rabbit hole is the only alternative to facing the awful truth. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
