I mean if you needed a literal pandemic to teach you that basic governance actually matters as a 60 year old that's just kind of sad lol
Good on Penn Jillette. Having to come to terms with your entire political identity and philosophy being wrong is not easy and most people could never do it.

What happened when a hospital gobbled up its competitor & became town's only player

"We had soiled beds, mounting sepsis issues & had just laid off 200 nurses. But we had a new logo”

It's the tale not just one of one hospital, but of healthcare in America

Speaking of previous budget issues, I mean look at this shit. This is what all our money is going to. Real progress exists outside of software in the realm of Renewable Energy and 77B that could have been leveraged elsewhere. Tax these dudes, modify our civilizational trajectory.
Mark Zuckerberg’s gamble on the ‘Metaverse’ has cost Meta more than $77B

The company now plans to cut spending on it and shift focus to AI wearables instead

The entire R&D budget of the department of energy for renewable energy and energy efficiency is, or was, $3.5B. For the whole country! We should triple that number instead. bsky.app/profile/cost...
SpaceX gets a $5.9B contract.

All the renewable energy & energy efficiency R&D done by the Department of Energy is only $3.5B. Wind, solar, geothermal, electric vehicles, fuel cell vehicles, biofuels, weatherization, buildings, efficiency, state programs, manufacturing, everything. Total: $3.5B 🔌💡

And the regulation isn't even that good! Mostly piddling fines. But that's enough to set off the tech bros.
I wrote about European tech policy last year:

a lot of the silicon valley Overlord freak out I think is just a lack of humility. Most of these guys were involved in One Thing by being at the right place and time, granting them ultimate wealth.

and they really haven't done anything since, getting angry at society for their myth they exist in.

like so much of what Silicon Valley is up to these days, it's almost impossible to figure out how much of this "Network State" stuff is serious efforts at techno-fascism, and how much is just grifting a childish elite with gobs of cash and a child's understanding of politics

🇸🇩🇺🇸 Sen. Van Hollen blasts the Trump administration for selling arms to the UAE while its Sudan allies continue to massacre children, pointing to the RSF attack on a kindergarten yesterday that killed at least 80 people, including 46 children (latest update from AJE).
The RSF just attacked a kindergarten, killing at least 33 children in Sudan.

Meanwhile, the Trump Admin. continues to sell arms to the UAE, who are aiding these atrocities.

Imagine if Trump spent as much time trying to stop the killing, as he did getting the UAE to invest in his crypto coin.
