Climate and environmental justice. Anticolonial, anti-capitalist, antifascist. Opinions my own.
This widely prevalent belief is exactly why so much of the US elite willfully ignore and permit open corruption.

Bari Weiss is the logical endpoint of corporate media. This is what happens when people who hate journalism are in charge of it. The only way journalism works is when it’s independent from the power it’s supposed to hold to account, which means ownership can’t have anything to do with those in power

The US government has become one of the leading sources of disinformation in the world.

Yes. And he's also the bad faith guy's smart guy, because he makes up intelligent sounding justifications for bad stuff that the bad faith guy wants to do.
Yglesias is the dumb-guys's-smart-guy because he creates the aesthetic of intelligence through his writing style and referencing

Spend a few seconds actually checking references, or read something he's written on a topic you actually know about, and you immediately realise he's lazy and arrogant
On the Yglesias debate today: I disagree with a lot of the takes about him.

First, he is smart and works hard and his blog can be good.

So, the problems?
He’s become nihilistic about politics so he is now self-serving, he butters up the wealthy and powerful, and he uses social media to troll.

A unifying characteristic of the present US regime is that they make wild assertions with zero evidence, and don't back down.

Centrism is just fascism lite.
Why would a political writer keep arguing that Dems should go along with Trump’s harsh immigration crackdown, cruelty to trans people, and climate change-worsening stances as politically necessary, no matter what public opinion data shows?

One logical answer is the writer agrees with those stances.
matt & co’s theory of how public opinion on immigration would respond to new information was simply empirically wrong.
at this point the only reasonable conclusion is they refuse to update their priors w/ new data because the data is inconvenient for them

Criminalizing doctors for providing life-saving treatment is a sure sign of totalitarianism.
The House of Representatives approved a bill that aims to criminalize providing gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth.

“I refuse to stop providing this care, knowing that I could potentially face 10 years in prison and a felony charge,” says Dr. Jeffrey Birnbaum.

If "Abundance" bros were acting in good faith, they would look at the evidence and start opposing LNG exports. But they're not acting in good faith.

The Trump regime wants to dismantle a world leading climate research center. Why? Because the US has become a petrostate where the government has been captured by fossil fuel interests.
They’re calling climate science “green new scam research”, in full denial of reality. 🤯

"ICE and CBP must be abolished" is the only reasonable position. We can debate the specifics of new agencies for immigration functions, but these agencies are simply too infected with a culture of impunity, racism, and fascism to continue. They're gangs with badges.

It's exactly right. But also note on the internet related stories—the banning of TikTok and the attack on Sec 230—Democrats happily helped MAGA accomplish their goals and people have cheered it on.

Democrats trying to destroy 230 are not helping you. They're helping Trump.
There’s a specific mechanism in authoritarian movements that we’re seeing play out in real-time across American media and tech. It’s a simple rule: "If we cannot co-opt it, we must destroy it."

It is the logic of "scorched earth." It's the logic of the Nero Decree and it's happening right now. 🧵

The US has backed paramilitary death squads in other countries for years. Now the current regime wants to bring the practice home to the US. This is classic imperial blowback.
The new DOJ memo for implementing NSPM-7 calls for bounties and a network of informants: “FBI shall establish a cash reward system for information... [and] establish cooperators to provide information and eventually testify against other members and leadership of domestic terrorist organizations.”

Driving is a privilege, not a right. Being able to walk safely in public, however, is a right. But US street design (in most places) turns this on its head. And, as with just about everything in this country, the harmful impacts disproportionately fall on Black and Brown people.
if you are going to plead on behalf of black and brown people to oppose efforts to place restrictions on people convicted of driving under the influence, you should also acknowledge that black and brown people are more likely than others to be killed in traffic accidents, especially as pedestrians
