i'm very attached to identifying only as a cat herder in my bio, but for the curious i am a production editor working on "serious" nonfiction at the S&S flagship imprint. and yes, i hire freelancers, including ones who work en español

Q: Politico reported on a group chat of young Republicans. Does this just reflect some bad apples?

HOCHUL: Some bad apples? These are the future of the GOP. This is so vile it's hard to find the words to put into context ... there's gotta be consequences ... this bullshit has to stop.

i like to do my grains joshua mcfadden's way instead of boiling in plain water:
a recipe from Joshua McFadden's SIX SEASONS titled "Farro."

Yield: About 2 c.

Ingredients:
EVOO
2 garlic cloves, smashed and peeled
½ tsp. chili flakes
1 c. farro
4 c. water
1 bay leaf
2 tsp. kosher salt

Method:
Heat a couple tbsp. EVOO in large skillet with lid over med. heat. Add garlic and chili flakes and toast slowly until soft, fragrant, and golden brown, ~3 mins.

Add farro and stir constantly to toast until fragrant, 3–5 mins. (or longer, as desired, for nuttier flavor)

Add water, bay leaf, and salt and bring to boil. Cover and reduce heat to simmer, 15 to 30 minutes, until farro has softened but grains haven't "exploded."

Drain and use warm. Toss with more olive oil and allow to cook if using cold.

On this day in queer history: Oct 14, 1977

During a live TV appearance in Iowa, anti-gay activist Anita Bryant was hit with a pie in protest of her “Save Our Children” campaign. A sweet moment of queer resistance.

It’s even worse. It’s reversing 400 years of Anglo-American constitutional development going back to Charles I’s personal rule when he refused to consult Parliament over spending and governance. Trump and his GOP lackeys are undoing stuff the Founders saw as fundamental to our system.

Vaccines are safe and effective.

Autism isn't caused by vaccines, and autistic people and their families deserve our support.

When you want information, ask your doctor.

It's more important than ever for all of us to speak plainly, truthfully, and directly about public health.

Despite what some, including at DHS, are claiming, this video isn’t from a year ago in Chicago. It was Friday in Hoffman Estates, in my district, a street I’ve walked myself. It appears to show a child being violently detained by ICE. It’s real, and I’m demanding accountability.

i cannot get over how quickly this is happening. the decline of the other two branches/ascent of the lawless executive is outpacing actual democratic decline, which is usually what precipitates executive consolidation. but in our case, the other two branches are collaborators

Next time an institution tells you how seriously it takes research misconduct, ask them if it's *this* seriously. www.bmj.com/content/297/...
In 1916 the BMJ published an article about the work done by James Shearer, an American physician working in the British Army as a sergeant (because he had no British qualification). He had described a
"delineator" which was better than x rays for portraying gunshot wounds. This caused a sensation and a lot of interest — but on investigation the work was found to have been invented. The BMJ published a retraction, but Shearer was tried by court martial and sentenced to death by firing squad.

FINDS THEM AND KILLS THEM

"Finds Them and Kills Them (Osh-Tisch) looked like a man, but wore women's clothing and had the heart of a woman.... she was brave and good."
― Pretty Shield

Her strength as a warrior is what earned her the name Osh-Tisch, which translates to “finds them and kills them."
Who is Osh-Tisch?
Osh-Tisch was a Apsáalooke Badé, a role within the Crow Nation that defied traditional gender norms, embodying both masculine and feminine qualities. Before colonization, Badé were deeply respected for their unique spiritual gifts, artistry, and contributions to community life.
As a Badé, Osh-Tisch carried responsibilities tied to culture, ceremony, and social balance. Their life shows how many of our nations embraced gender diversity long before Western colonial powers imposed rigid binaries.
