I'm reading through 'Akira' now, so this will be my thread dedicated to Book 1. I will make threads for the other books when I get to them.
I feel that Otomo Katsuhiro's work speaks powerfully and directly to the turbulent world we find ourselves in today, including what is happening in America.

One of the most profoundly significant spiritual moments of my life happened on the Red Line in Boston.
For years, when I lived not-in-cities, I would see the start of a skyline coming into view on a train and realize, “Oh. This is what breathing is meant to be.”

One of my hottest takes is that I am personally exhausted by Christian nature spirituality. It’s not wrong; I have no valid objections to any of; we’ve all read Annie Dillard and Mary Oliver; I like Mary Oliver.
But the radical under-development of urban spirituality deeply frustrates me.

A lot of the critiques of liberalization with China almost always miss 1) What they would've done instead, 2) That China is it own country with power and agency and ability to chose its own direction, and China chose illiberalism, 3) China's scale and governance model always made it an awkward fit

Quick reactions:
China wanted to liberalize too, but the liberalizers were mostly marginalized by the time Hu took over
It seemed like a good bet given what seemed to be happening in E. Europe & Russia (Russia is probably a worse case of this than China)
It was still the right choice at the time

This is also said about Europe's approach to China and I simply don't believe this is true. I was at conferences with senior US folk in the early 2010s and none thought China would become more democratic or liberal.
We thought we could compete.

The funniest part of Elon spiraling out about this is that he isn’t responding with anything linked to others or relationships, just posting “great movie”

I went to see it in a small screen in Banbury where the mood was exhilarated going in and utterly deflated afterwards. And then just because I couldn’t believe it had actually been as bad as it was I went to see it on a massive screen in London.
I saw Phantom Menace in theaters the weekend it came out and that was the first time I considered a movie could truly suck

Great story.
a random men reading story that isn't 'ooh, look at that man reading.' When I lived in South Korea I had a friend, Paul, who was an ex-army sergeant in his late thirties and had come from a pretty rough family background in rural Illinois. Very sweet guy, kind of a disordered life.

this is the right analogy. social media is a drug. substance interactions is medically proven way to fuck yourself over. choose one drug and stick to it

Dave, you can’t count a book as read if it was an audio book. You didn’t read it you listened to it. Two fundamentally different ways to ingest media. We as a country, need to stop people from saying they “read” 50 books this year when they actually listened to them. Absolute fraudulent behavior.

At least the Brits made sure to defang the House of Lords slowly but surely, culminating in the 1997 Act.
In the US the Senate "wears the pants" relative to the House, even if they're supposed to be equal, and that the Senate by no means deserves it.
