Hello new followers!

I'm Aleksei (he/they) and I'm the other half/cavalier primary of @thelionmachine.bsky.social

I'm a PhD student working on German Catholic immigrants and yellow fever in 19th c New Orleans. I write spec lit, dabble in art, and generally nerd around.
I knew it was going to be a grad student or an adjunct. And because grad students and adjuncts are cheap and easy to replace, they're the front line in the student-as-customer model of higher ed. Unhappy customer? Sacrifice a lowly TA or adjunct, problem solved.

Unions now. Unions forever.

Now at $295 of the $925 I need for Dec. rent. Almost 1/3 of the way there! Thank you so much—I'm a queer, disabled freelancer in a very red state, doing my best to support myself and my arthritic senior dog.
Your shares and support make a world of difference.

I taught religious studies to mostly Catholic undergrads at a Very Catholic School. I wouldn't have accepted this in any of those classes, even ones where I assigned reflections to interrogate beliefs or theology. This just sucks, and the girl should respect herself enough to learn in college.

El and their sweet elder dog Astra need our help to pay rent. El is a dear, dear triend who had to leave an abusive work situation that was destroying their physical health. Please help this disabled queer trans freelance editor stuck in hostile Florida have safe housing for another month.
Now at $10 of $925 for Dec. rent. Thank you so much for helping me get this started! Payment's due this Monday, Dec. 1—please share widely so we can keep this going.
URGENT request: I’m raising $925 for Dec. rent. Having a disability that varies in severity makes some months harder than others, and I’m still financially behind.

If someone could help me with $5 to kick off funding, that would mean a lot! 💜

I just had a bowl of maple yoghurt and fresh blueberries, and I think I ascended to a new level of New England. Which is impressive down on the Gulf Coast.

Anytime an animated film/tv show hits this level of cultural explosion, I just feel SO proud & so much love for animation & the community. Congrats to the entire KPDH team! 😭😭😭
Okay, the crowd going nuts like someone just scored a touchdown at the Super Bowl all *through* the KDH performance is a hell of a thing to see hear/see:

Come and learn about how the tropes undergirding anti-Jewish hatred and conspiracy theories as they exist today came to be…

Gotta get the history to know where the tropes live in the discourse today.

I always feel some kind of way when I find out an academic has created a whole ass conference based off my work and did not think to invite me which had happened twice and that's not a LOT but it is two whole opportunities that I benefitted from literally zero.

In 2016, we were living in Andover, in the UK. My wife was assigned as an exchange officer at the Army Air Corps base at Middle Wallop (yes, really).*

The US Army has a tradition: senior leaders, in dress uniform, serve junior troops Thanksgiving dinner.

I microwaved two sweet potatoes just now for dinner, and you bet your sweet bippity I stabbed them and watched them like a hawk.

Orange goop contained (deliciously).
My Momma wanted to make squash to add to some dish. She'd read about softening it in the microwave, so she put two butternut squash in there, cranked it, and set it working.

I was coming out of the back of the house, passing in front of the kitchen where it opened into the dining room. +

Ellen Harding Baker (1847-1886) was a US astronomer and teacher, known for her Solar System Quilt, used as a teaching aid in her lectures on astronomy.
She likely began creating the Solar System Quilt in 1876, and it apparently took her until 1883 to complete the project.
