Do our brains really vulcanize in our mid-30s, after which affirmation of our political beliefs is like crack, and contradictory ideas are bounced away like BBs off a truck tire?

To a very large extent, of course, we associate truth with convenience – with what most closely accords with self-interest and personal well-being or promises best to avoid awkward effort or unwelcome dislocation of life. We also find highly acceptable what contributes most to self-esteem.

But perhaps most important of all, people most approve of what they best understand. … Economic and social behavior are complex, and to comprehend their character is mentally tiring. Therefore we adhere, as though to a raft, to those ideas which represent our understanding. This is a prime manifestation of vested interest. For a vested interest in understanding is more preciously guarded than any other treasure. It is why men react, not infrequently with something akin to religious passion, to the defense of what they have so laboriously learned.

Familiarity may breed contempt in some areas of human behavior, but in the field of social ideas it is the touchstone of acceptability. … I shall refer to these ideas henceforth as the Conventional Wisdom.

FT has the blow-by-blow which US media outlets were incapable of reporting with any accuracy. Note how Trump is little more than a sock puppet for Putin, doing his bidding... so the FT's read out is almost identical to the report in Kremlin TV, which in turn was based on Trump's report to Putin.

Remember April 2009 when about 250,000 people took to America’s streets in Tea Party rallies and the media was like “oh man, the Dems are in trouble?” Approximately 28X as many people took to the streets to protest Trump yesterday. Didn’t even make the NYT front page.

In April of 2009 I observed the Tea Party rally in Salem. As this front page story says, there were a couple hundred people there. This past weekend in Salem there were roughly 2-3000 people at the Hands Off rally. Yet the Tea Party coverage seemed to take that event far more seriously.

Hundreds of people uneasy over the future of their country gathered on the state Capitol steps on Wednesday to protest federal spending and state-level taxation.

than 1,000 people attended the Salem Tea Party protest, which ran from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Organizers placed attendance at more than 2,000 people.
The rally was passionate but peace-ful, although many people carried handmade signs bearing stark and angry messages. A fake wooden pitchfork read "Politicians take note. We the people are about to revolt." Anoth er sign read "200+ years to build the Republic, 3 mos. to destroy it."
Many attendees said they were motivated to protest by the billions in stimulus spending and bailouts that have been doled out in recent months.

Yeah. Ever since 2016 I've felt as if we were cosplaying the 1930s. Always wondered, "Why did the people back then allow WWII to happen?" So now getting schooled, I guess. The South Koreans solved the problem pretty neatly, not sure we can chivvy our institutions, tho... Got any ideas?
