Just in time to get into the Halloween spirit, I’m teaching a horror writing class with Queens Collaboratory. If you’re in NYC and want to dip your toes into writing horror, this the place to do it. Tickets are $20-$25, and spots are pretty limited. luma.com/9pzyg2tm

Spookymonth continues apace! This week, two favorites return: M.L. Krishnan and Gemma Files. Yes, really. Join us Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. PDT! @emelkrishnan.bsky.social @gemmafiles.bsky.social www.storyhour2020.com
Color photo headshot of Gemma Files, a fair-skinned woman with brown hair worn in a shoulder-length bob without bangs. She wears metal-framed glasses, a black blouse, a necklace of glass beads, and a subtle pink lipstick. She appears to be sitting in a well-lit interior with framed black-and-white photo portraits on bright white walls. Looking into the camera with dark eyes, she smiles sweetly, showing enviable dimples. Head-and-shoulders red-tinged color photo of writer M.L Krishnan, a woman with light brown skin and straight, glossy hair pulled back. Her hair may be black or may be purple; the red light makes this a mystery. She wears large plastic-framed glasses, a red silk tank, gold earrings with ornate hearts hanging from sunburst decorated with red hearts, a gold ring in her septum and several gold rings on her fingers, red lipstick, and black cat-eye eyeliner. She rests her chin on one beringed hand, her face in three-quarter view, and regards the camera with a serious expression.

Honestly did not realize this was paywalled because I subscribed to them and it has been a far better use of my money than WaPo or NYT, and also this was a really interesting article. (if occasionally enraging)
andreagrimes.com
For ex.: Today's excellent piece on intimacy coordinator backlash is paywalled, b/c we paid the writer a fair (if tbh lower than we'd like) rate of $.50/wd, b/c it's the right thing to do to walk the walk of supporting feminist journalism. We believe in paying freelancers in dollars, not "exposure."

Little update. Mostly been off bsky coz I've had some complications involving fevers, bleeding. It's been a rough six weeks, physically, mentally, emotionally. Would have liked to have rested but I gotta pay for the hospital bills and various tests and medications. Anything you can spare will help.

Hi all; I'm going to undergo a significant procedure later this year (sorry, would rather not disclose) and my husband's health insurance doesn't cover it. We're going to need funds for the care during and after. Any help would be much appreciated:

I have a wonderful bit of good news to share!

I have a new literary agent and am now represented by @keiralekseii.bsky.social of Azantian Literary Agency!

The moment Keir and I connected, I knew she was the perfect person to represent my work. I cannot wait to see where we go from here. 🥰✨

There needs to be more coverage of this in the news. I have read so many stories bout this on Facebook, first hand stories of the terror of that storm, and very little coverage n media.

Screenshot of a Facebook post. Photo is an elderly woman holding a child on her ap on a couch with flood water around them. Both are wearing jackets inside. Text says: This was after our 1st drift.. staying put for awhile. Our 3rd and final drift was terrifying. House moving fast then we started spinning in circles. While we were spinning in circles my oldest daughter was just staring at me while I held onto my younger two. Kipnuk doesn't look like kipnuk anymore, like more than 3/4 of the homes displaced, power poles fallen. It smells like stove oil outside. Contaminated

ICE is all over the city and burbs today, including Waukegan. Multiple reports on social media from people who have found empty work vans and are trying to locate family of their owners. This is a near daily occurrence now.

This indigenous Canadian short film I saw last night as part of @kierlajanisse.bsky.social’s great All the Haunts Be Ours 2 folk horror box set (but apparently also available via YouTube?) would be an excellent thing to watch on Indigenous Peoples Day.
A review of Nalujuk Night (2021)
Interesting that it takes a short film (box set “extra”) to clarify this realization for me, especially considering that the subgenre has its roots in an early nonfiction work (Häxän), but I think a g...

"Instead of Columbus, we should celebrate all Italian women for being so hot." this is a genuine thought I had this morning. I'm sharing it as an act of contrition. please do not get mad at me. please do not become passionately enraged with your fiery tempers and strike me with a heavily-ringed hand

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by ICE in Everett and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia.
A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

We have armed secret police kidnapping people off the street based on the color of their skin.

When we win: we will haul them before a Senate committee. The masks will come off. There will be consequences.
