Been thinking this morning about how if you're a US freelancer and you haven't increased your rates by about 6% since June 2025, you're taking a pay cut.

Which also means: if you're a publisher and haven't increased what you're paying by 6%, you've given your staff/freelancers a pay cut.

The best description of the Telegraph you'll read this week.
I just don't need to know what the Telegraph has written about Dungeons & Dragons. It's a newspaper for people who are frightened of samosas.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Coming next week! I'm grateful that I can finally share this very personal story of grief and swamps.
Transformed by a fungal infection that connects humans with nature, one woman feels closer to the world than ever, but further from the people she loves the most...

If you like an author's work, the best thing you can do is buy it. The second best thing you can do is ask your local library to buy it. Or, do both!
A reminder that the median book deal for a debut author in the UK is £7000, paid over 12-18 months. (from 2022 Society of Authors report). Some of your favourite writers are struggling. societyofauthors.org/2022/12/06/a....

Story day!! I’m so delighted to debut in @unchartedmag.bsky.social with ‘Love Story in Colored Glass:’ an inter-dimensional love story about a starship that breaks reality - and a pair of lovers who find themselves, again and again, across the fracture.

This week, I withdrew from a speaking engagement at a public university because they sent me a list of prohibited “words & concepts.” I will not humor this censorship. It does a disservice to the stories I’m discussing & the audience, who deserve unfettered access to information & conversation.

Amal’s audiobook for The River Has Roots, her novel about two sisters who make music together, has *actual music played and sung by her and her sister* and you should listen to it.
I'm so happy more people will be made aware of Gem Carmella's brilliant narration & Steve Wagner & the Macmillan Audio folks' excellent work producing it! & it's honestly amazing to get to share this kind of recognition with my sister, because we sang & played music together on it.
