Yep. Genre is a map. And like every map, it can be useful but it also distorts. Its for writers to not mentally accept the distortion as a kind of truth.

Genres aren't real. They are mental projections we impose on stories to simplify the way talk about and sell them but stories come unshaped from deep within us and writers shouldn't feel constrained by or even respect genres at all. The story comes first.

I had no idea what One Battle After Another was about before I decided to go see it. Hadn't seen any trailers or anything for it and so I didnt know what to expect. It started off shaky but by the end I thoroughly enjoyed that weird movie.
