Oh for sure. Def agree. Much of it sounds less like, "here is information for the purposes of documentation & posterity" (a la heyday LiveJournal missives), and more like: "Welcome to this week's episode of Authors/Pubs/Influencers Behaving Badly. Here are our top stories of the day."

I'm not sure how to feel about the burgeoning cottage industry of online bookish gossip.

On one hand, spilling the tea may be cathartic---in the group chat, with your pals.

Whole channels dedicated to dishing out tabloid-level recaps & exclusives on authors, publishers & Booktok? Hmm. I dunno.

Your dragons made it to Australia and have brought this mum and her son closer together in a cooperative endeavour instead of a zero-sum game that ends in tears for one of us.

Today, I learned, to my great pleasure (and slight alarm) that when we first moved to Canada, for 2-3 years, we lived next door to Canada's foremost Indigenous children's rights advocate, Cindy Blackstock.

She even gave us her patio chairs. We still have them!

The daily fluctuation of temp & the elements is the one thing I might never fully adjust to moving north of the equator. I spent 25 years only ever having to plan for rain! Now, every October is a One Day, Four Seasons challenge.

What I know from being Black my whole life, and poor for the majority of it, is that politely ignoring a root issue to attend to one closer to the surface is like robbing Peter to pay Paul. It’s a band-aid on a gaping wound, and it will not hold your flesh together for long. The US needs stitches.

I am constantly re-learning what it meants to be human in this world, not because I'm a good writer, but because being a writer who wants to honestly represent the spectrum of humanity in literature forces me to reckon with, and be curious about, the world--and myself--in an honest manner.

I say it all the time, but imma say it again: a lot of very book smart people lack the emotional education and communication skills that would allow them to generate the courage they want to embody in their work. They are incurious about their own emotional lives, and consequently, those of others.

Creative practice--defined as you please--that sits in the quiet, that refills the well, that holds itself to little else but you, is crucial.
