October 2025

***

Not much to redeem last month tbh: it got colder, started getting dark earlier, and horrors abounded

But at least there are only max-40 months remaining in Donald Trump's presidency? 🤞

AMA! Q&A will be added to the thread as quote-skeets
AI-generated image of pumpkin with orange eyes and razor-sharp teeth atop a zombified body, sitting on the left side of a couch with its arms in a shrugging pose, as it answers questions from a talk show host seated on the right side of the couch. The host is wearing a dark-colored suit, white shirt, and red tie.

I refer to it as the "Shoot the Nazis" option myself

by this time next year, we want ICE agent to be one of the most miserable, soul destroying, hated jobs in america, we want parking enforcement to look like a dream job by comparison

the thing is, all that knock off amazon operator gear you bought to look tough and scary just looks fucking silly when you are being gyrated at by someone wearing an inflatable frog costume and being mooned by a naked bagpiper on a unicycle, it just doesn’t work, the self image cannot hold

It should not be understated how much clever shit like this actually annihilates morale at places like ICE/CBP.

Getting made fun of like this on national television while people laugh at you is.. well, you may call it victory wine, but it ain't.

Further evidence is that zero Republicans will condemn this
davidaustinwalsh.bsky.social
Also not to relitigate the fascism debate yet again, but seemingly every Republican staffer under 40 expressing admiration for Adolf Hitler should be pretty conclusive evidence of the fascistic dimensions of the modern American right.

Trump won. You don't have to do this anymore.

Young Republicans

We are appalled by the vile and inexcusable language revealed in the Politico article published today. Such behavior is disgraceful, unbecoming of any Republican, and stands in direct opposition to the values our movement...

There is no conceivable argument that these ships, even if we assume they were carrying narcotics, could not be dealt with in some other way. I think we can just drop the caveats and say: This is mass murder.
chrislhayes.bsky.social
Unless and until some kind of compelling legal and moral argument is presented as to why this is a legitimate use of deadly force, this is just…mass murder.

They are terrified of the No Kings rallies and doing everything they can to discredit them.

If you're on the fence about going, just think of how much it'll piss off these assholes.

Remember when Stephen Miller claimed the Chicago apartment raid was on a building “filled with Tren de Aragua terrorists”?

Well, DHS has now dropped the number of alleged TdA members arrested in the building from 2 to 1.
Just one "verified" Tren de Aragua member and one U.S. citizen with an active warrant were among the 37, DHS said, without saying how it had verified that gang affiliation. Others taken that day, the agency said, were "illegal aliens."

I'm not sure what the play is. Usually delay is a defense-preferred strategy, because you never know what can happen (witnesses disappear, move, die, etc). But if Comey's set on a trial, I'd imagine he'd want to rack up the win faster.

This is yet another reminder that the "you can just walk around with your papers and be fine!" is a lie: the cops routinely claim whatever documentation you provide is invalid

Chicago Tribune: Greeley, who was born at Illinois Masonic hospital and is adopted, carries a copy of her passport just in case she runs into federal agents.

“I am Latina and I am a service worker,” Greeley said. “I fit the description of what they’re looking for now.”

During the encounter, Greeley said they told her she “doesn’t look like” a Greeley.

“They said this isn’t real, they kept telling me I’m lying, I’m a liar,” Greeley recalled. “I told them to look in the rest of my wallet, I have my credit cards, my insurance.”

I'm sorry, is the Trump Administration talking to a tech platform?

Is it...requesting content moderation?
Today following outreach from @thejusticedept, Facebook removed a large group page that was being used to dox and target @ICEgov agents in Chicago.
The wave of violence against ICE has been driven by online apps and social media campaigns designed to put ICE officers at risk just for doing their jobs. The Department of Justice will continue engaging tech companies to eliminate platforms where radicals can incite imminent violence against federal law enforcement.

I don't think the SCOTUS composition has changed since the initial argument, but I could be wrong

But yes, it's the case where the LA legislature was ordered to create a second black district due to rampant racial gerrymandering

bsky.app/profile/mser...
mseraphimsl.bsky.social
Yeah, that case stinks on ice. Isn't that the one that got that second district created because the SCOTUS said they had to do so and now it's coming back because the composition of the court changed?
gregdoucette.bsky.social
Not that I've seen. There is R annoyance about inflation, and recently about layoffs. But zero connection between current circumstances and Trump

It's classic "good czar, bad boyars" -- Trump cannot fail, he can only be failed

Polls aside, I’m curious about the opinion of those on the ground in NC on what the “vibes” and feel of the citizenry there. Are you sensing Trump is losing *any support* from Republicans there based on the economy and antics from ICE?
gregdoucette.bsky.social
Republicans tried that in North Carolina too, just a few months ago in Jefferson Griffin v NC Board of Elections 🙃
adotsad.bsky.social
Legitimately disgusting that were getting legal rigging of elections and nobody cares in the media or the electorate. This is not that functionally different than tossing out thousands of votes to help your side win.
taniel.bsky.social
North Carolina Republicans announced today they’re going to pass a new congressional map to draw a Dem out of Congress; they already did last cycle, going from 7-7 to 10-4. Thus would be 11-3. t.co/XLJIhe8vZn
gregdoucette.bsky.social
I'm not sure racial gerrymander arguments survive appellate review. I can see the federal district judges striking it down, and 4th Circuit agreeing

But hard to see SCOTUS agree that racial gerrymanders are illegal, esp given the pending re-argument in Louisiana v Callais

bsky.app/profile/dock...
dockennedy.bsky.social
I agree on the non-zero attempt at 12-2 because NC is a gerrymandering OG but I'm not sure they can get there without opening themselves up to racial arguments. Besides Trump demands fealty, not results, which trying for 1 more seat should demonstrate for Berger
gregdoucette.bsky.social
Sure seems that way

bsky.app/profile/firs...
firstcritique.bsky.social
That is one risk of gerrymandering; if your assumption about how big of a wave is possible winds up being wrong you can wind up wiping out. With that said so far it seems like voters really do not care much what their elected representatives do. They care more about what lies they are told.
gregdoucette.bsky.social
I do passionately hope so

Our current state of affairs was because of a larger-than-expected R electorate in 2010, which led to an R majority in the state legislature, on a D-gerrymandered map, in a Census cycle 😩
