Thought I had the family road trip more or less locked down but then I realized we might be able to shoehorn in a visit to the World’s Oldest Ham

I cannot emphasize enough: 3 year olds do not give a shit if people are gay. They don’t care. They want to know what your favorite dinosaur is, or why you’re not currently wearing a butterfly costume.

With respect, the reason people are assuming you'll cut corners by not checking is because you're already cutting corners by not doing the reading yourself and instead asking an LLM to do it for you.

Using LLMs for one part of a project undermines confidence in the integrity of the whole thing.
A post from a respected professor saying (with reference to her LLM usage) "Oh crikey of course I'm going to check it. How interesting that everyone on here seems to assume I wouldn't!"

A little frustrating that bsky moderation prevents us from seeing violence like this
Interaction between Derek Guy and Matt Stoller on X, the Everything App. Stoller: "Your weird insecurities aside, you consistently lie that native born Americans can't and never have made clothes, and push offshoring in sleazy ways. Then when confronted you have to talk about your left wing views. You're slime." Guy replies: "not true. i've been writing about and promoting US-made clothes for about fifteen years. an early article that comes to mind is my love for 3sixteen jeans, which are made in los angeles. that was published in 2011, the year the second iraq war ended, a war you promoted."

I've always said this, but since last November, I've been pointing this out frequently in whatever venues to whatever audiences I can: "The planet NASA studies most is Earth."

A lot of comments on Mars rovers or Moon landings, but it's important to remember that the planet NASA studies most is Earth. This is less about cutting flashy things like moonwalks and more about keeping communities in the dark on climate, weather, agriculture, pollution, natural hazards, and more.

Why do people who talk about "figuring out how to live together" always mean we should shut up live with fascists, and not that fascists should shut up and live with minority groups

I can tell you as someone who works on early medieval manuscripts, some of those books were not read. Over a thousand years ago they were killing a whole herd of cattle to make a book that sat on a plinth and looked pretty, so some bishop could say 'yes I have that text in my library'. So good luck

The veneration of Books As Objects misses the point entirely. If you're reading a book, turn the corners down, break the spine, spill soup on it. It's your book, go nuts. A pristine, unread book is a tragedy in a way that a beloved, much-read book that looks like the dog's been at it could never be.

The American style of printing titles on spines top-to-bottom is superior to the European style of printing them bottom-to-top because when a book is placed face-up on a table the title appears right-side-up on the spine

Books aren't just what the writer puts in. They're what the reader puts in, too. And some readers are assholes.

Like, no wonder the Soviet Union fell a few months later.

What POSSIBLE counter could they have to Cher in fishnets on the USS Missouri?

If that's what you're up against you've lost.
