I grew up in a secondhand bookshop owning house with full shelves on all vertical surfaces, which may have made me somewhat immune/disillusioned

Almost all books are of no interest to any given person, no matter how polymathic or eclectic they think they are. That's kind of the point.
robinjohnson.bsky.social
I do have some Books As Objects of my favourite books, I guess it's like having a film poster. It's when people fawn over 'books' *without knowing which books they even are* that I don't get it
robinjohnson.bsky.social
It's Books (singular mass noun) As Matter that gives me the eyerolls. I see those posts where someone puts an image of a room covered in bookshelves and says "*drool*" and I'm like... what if they're all bad?
nick-pettigrew.bsky.social
The veneration of Books As Objects misses the point entirely. If you're reading a book, turn the corners down, break the spine, spill soup on it. It's your book, go nuts. A pristine, unread book is a tragedy in a way that a beloved, much-read book that looks like the dog's been at it could never be.

Why do people who talk about "figuring out how to live together" always mean we should shut up live with fascists, and not that fascists should shut up and live with minority groups

Now that's what I call being "PUNCHED" by a "KANGAROO", eh readers?

Believe old game devs when we tell you: burnout is real, it's painful. Be honest with yourself, take the breaks when you need them.
I've been burnt out for so long, I only just realized how long. I went from crunch at Iridium into crunch at Giant Squid with no break. About 3 years. It was too long.

This is important. Unlike other allegedly “woke” cancellations, Columbus was known as a sadistic scoundrel even in his own time. Montesinos and De Las Casas complained loudly to Rome. He is not celebrated in any of the countries where he actually landed.

I'm like, why would you pay for that

I'm convinced "Trump gets all the credit" was promised in exchange for something or other in a non-public part of the agreement

schrödinger's protests, which simultaneously are fake and burn down cities

… I just performed heart surgery to turn a guy into a city, technically fulfilling my agreement with a piece of the moon (but breaking the spirit of the agreement- the Creditor wanted me to turn the union leader into a city so they could marry her)

Fallen London is gloriously bizarre.

"Good news, I read your dishwasher's design spec and it's clearly NOT supposed to flood your kitchen. We will win this. That'll be $300"
cait.bsky.social
this is your fucking job that you're being paid to do. Imagine asking your plumber to stop your dishwasher from flooding your apartment and he's like "well what exactly do you want me to do?" The specifics are your part dog idk!

(You may know this already) She definitely wrote about having Feelings for women, and may have had an affair with Jane Williams, whose husband drowned in the same boat accident as Percy Shelley bi.org/en/articles/...

a group of people were like "i found a way to live my life as a truer version of myself" and instead of being like "that's beautiful, how can i help" people were like "i don't think schools should have books in them anymore"

...and if you find it frustrating when they don't communicate with each other (I don't, as long as they behave in character, but I understand why you might) - isn't it *less* annoying if there's a logistical reason they can't?
robinjohnson.bsky.social
I really like that though! The characters have all the information *between* them, but in order to win, the right info has to get to the right people. You the viewer, as the only omniscient being in play, know what NEEDS to happen and can cheer/experience tragic irony when it does/n't
robinjohnson.bsky.social
why is the cell phone thing a problem? They'd be able to solve the case faster if they had a technology that doesn't exist yet? That's probably always true of most stories written more than a few decades ago

IMO it's improved. It works better as a period piece set in the 90s than it did as a contemporary show at the time.
