Became a journalist at 40, in this city that's given me a 1,000 chances to start, fail, and start again. It's been an education. Not sure I belong with the incredible group so honored by the Baltimore City Historical Society, but I am grateful—no award or recognition could mean more to me 🙏.

Wisdom, moral imagination, an enlarged sympathy for those who live or have lived differently from yourself. This is what you get from studying the Humanities. So quite important, actually.

Also notable: the Supreme Court ruled this unconstitutional just a few years later, so Baltimore found other means to impose segregation (restrictive covenants, "slum" clearance, etc.), which were quite effective.

On this day in 1913, the Baltimore City Council passed an ordinance requiring Black and white residents to live on separate blocks. The law was part of the first city-wide effort in the country to create legally segregated neighborhoods.
