My strongest book-related belief is that the paperback should come first and then the hardback after for people who want a fancy edition.

As awful as the idea of a live action Jetsons movie is in 2025... can I say Jim Carrey is really good casting for George Jetson?

My mother's birthday was the other week and my uncle - who took up whittling over lockdown - gave her this brilliant guy. I love it so much

Over the years I've posted numerous cartoons based around Venn diagrams, and occasionally I will get mathematically minded people telling me that they're not actually Venn diagrams.

They are correct, of course. They're not Venn diagrams, they're cartoons. They have completely different functions.

it is ALWAYS worth pointing out who gets to be just a helpless little innocent precious baby boy at the age of 34, vs. who is framed by the cops as a big scary dangerous man whose candy bar might be a gun when he's barely in middle school, or described as a "13-year-old woman" by her predator

Very tired of writers who are considered "quintessential" always being, y'know, white guys. Tired of the archetypal idea of what a writer looks and sounds like, what personality type they have, how they write, what they write about, all being centered around white guys.

It's so f*cking alienating.

Thought I was fucking losing it then. Turned over to ITV1 and they're showing The Dark Knight again, the second time in three nights. It's a great film but come on, play the game. No wonder broadcast television's on its arse.

There are so many responses savaging the looks of these men. It's taking the easy way out. There are plenty of people who look like those men and are not racist sacks of human refuse. Something is deficient in their souls. In their minds. In the manner in which they were raised.
Thousands of posts from a private Young Republican Telegram chat reveal a culture of casual racism/antisemitism, rape jokes and celebration of Hitler/Nazism.

this is by far the worst reading of Alan Moore’s Watchmen I’ve ever seen and if you spend an appreciable amount of time online you will know what a crowning achievement that is
thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.
