FACT OF THE DAY. 15 October 1946. Leading Nazi Hermann Göring (aged 53), founder of the Gestapo and head of the Luftwaffe, poisoned himself just hours before his scheduled hanging for war crimes in Nuremberg using a cyanide capsule.

PERSON OF THE DAY. 14 October 1940. Cliff Richard (Harry Rodger Webb) was born in Lucknow, India but moved UK in 1948. He’s sold over 250 million records and 21 million singles in the UK with 14 No 1 hits. He’s 3rd-top-selling artist in UK Singles Chart history behind The Beatles and Elvis Presley.

FACT OF THE DAY. 14 October 1969. Bank of England introduced the 50p coin to replace the 10 Shilling (“Ten Bob”) note. It was part of the transition towards the full introduction of decimal currency in February 1971.

PERSON OF THE DAY. 13 October 1925. Margaret Thatcher was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire. She was the 1st British woman Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990 and 1st woman to lead the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. She was also the longest-serving British PM of the 20th century.

FACT OF THE DAY. 13 October 1269. The present church building at Westminster Abbey was consecrated, meaning it was declared sacred and a place of worship. The rebuilding began in 1245. Westminster Abbey has been the final resting place for 17 monarchs.

FACT OF THE DAY. 12 October 1984. Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher survived an assassination attempt when an IRA time bomb exploded at the Grand Hotel, Brighton, during the period of the annual Conservative Party Conference.

PERSON OF THE DAY. 11 October 1937. England and Man Utd football star Bobby Charlton was born in Ashington, Northumberland. He played 606 league games for the club, scoring 199 goals. He played 106 times for England, notching up 49 goals. He was a member of the 1966 England World Cup winning team.

FACT OF THE DAY. 11 October 1982. Mary Rose, the pride of Henry VIII’s English fleet, which sank on 19 July 1545, was raised in the Solent. The warship is now preserved at the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth.

PERSON OF THE DAY. 10 October 2004. Christopher Reeve died (aged 52). He’s best known for playing Superman in 4 films. Other films include: The Bostonians, and Remains of the Day. He became severely disabled after a riding accident in 1995 and campaigned for disability rights.

FACT OF THE DAY. 10 October 1963. Édith Piaf died (aged 47). She became France’s national chanteuse and one of the country’s most widely known international singing stars. Her most well known song was No Regrets (Non, je ne regrette rien).

FACT OF THE DAY. 9 October 1974. Oskar Schindler died (aged 66). He’s credited with saving at least 1,200 Jews from death during the Holocaust. His story featured in the Hollywood film Schindler’s List.

PERSON OF THE DAY. 8 October 1967, Clement Attlee died (aged 84). As Labour Prime Minister from 1945 to 1951 his governments introduced a range of social and economic reforms that transformed Britain. With Churchill concentrating on military matters Attlee had led domestic policy since 1940.

FACT OF THE DAY. 8 October 1980. British Leyland launched the Austin Mini Metro. It was intended to complement and eventually replace the iconic Mini. The Metro was named by What Car? as Car of The Year in 1983.
