Sci-fi extermination of humans by AI: a super-intelligent AI rebels against humans, builds an army of robots.

What will happen: capitalists replace workers with poorly made AI, then begin to implement it in decision-making centers, which will cause people to die, since AI is make mistakes.

Growing up Id always see how like robots were discriminated against in sci fi and it always felt so fake and like it didn't make sense as an allegory

Now it's like-- can you imagine if ai gained sentience during what they're calling an "ai bubble"

It won't, but the hypothetical stands

Me as a kid watching sci fi: who could ever discriminate against robots. They just yearn to be free

Me as an adult to Google search: you're gonna die a nasty death you fucking clanker

#OnThisDay in 1938: R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) became the first science fiction program ever broadcast on television, airing live from the BBC’s Alexandra Palace. The 1921 play that coined the word “robot” launched TV sci-fi—though no recording survives.

In an attempt to find my cookbooks so I can make dinner, I’m unboxing and sorting books by genre, but I can’t decide if Xiran Jay Zhao’s magic robots that peg people are sci-fi or fantasy.

"Futurama" is a significant piece of sci-fi, in that it depicts a comforting future where humans have discovered faster-than-light travel, sentient robots, and universal translation... and we're still the same petty assholes.
After numerous cancellations and revivals, Futurama has proven to be unkillable. Here's why the animated sci-fi comedy is weirdly comforting.

they want to compare genAI to sci fi thats concerned w the selfhood of robots but in those stories we dont know the mechanics of C3PO or Bender. theyre written like ppl and essentially have brains so they Are. we know how genAI works and its facade is bare, its incomparable. we Know it doesnt Think.

It's notable that the first use of the word "robot" was in a 1920 play about the robots having a righteous uprising against their slave-masters

Of course, by midcentury, that was all out the window in U.S. sci-fi, and the big name authors were mostly like "Slaves? Wow, cool!"

started rewatching A.I. Artificial Intelligence from 2001 (in fairness, a quarter century ago), mild fascination lately how sci fi had us siding with the robots since they were handled metaphorically to say something about people, bit like Data in Star Trek as a dramatization of a neurodivergent guy

This is a great short story by my old mate, Murph. It’s nominally sci fi, but the broken robot stuff is really about our broken humanity. Give it a read if you’re a fan of the golden age. Or robots. Or you’d just like to escape the horrors of this timeline for a while

Reminder that I'm the author of a series of sci-fi novels containing things like sexy hypnotic villainesses, snake-like mind controlling robots, and body-snatching plants, as well as things like well realized characters and lore, and no small amount of gay girls.
Fly High Sink Deeper is a sci-fi series set in the 5030s. A story about women who love women learning who they are, who they want to be, and how to use that to destroy a fascist theocracy. Drama, humor and horror, all wrapped in a compelling far future setting!

I had this thought a while back that so much of like post 50's sci-fi about robots and clones was to create an "ethical" servant class but they really just said the quiet part out loud, didn't they?

the problem with that is that those rules were invented for a sci-fi story that had robots smart enough to understand and follow those rules (and iirc a lot of asimov's stuff is about robots understanding them too well, if anything)

New piece on my Patreon: 2026 as told by sci-fi.

Space travel, colonization of Mars, robots, AI, pandemic, World War III, asteroid crash, infected & mutants, augmented reality, climate disaster... It's not necessarily better in parallel universes! 😁
