My favorite artifact in the "you don't need AI to do art" discourse is, of course, screenwriter Dan O'Bannon's sketch of the facehugger to explain it to Giger.

Genuinely astonishing to me that there are people on here who hate liberals so much they just end up becoming pro-Nazi by default

You think you can outsmart your brain, but you can't. If you do something ironically, you will end up doing it earnestly. This is good (exercise, diet, study) and bad (racism, bigotry, hatefulness). But you can't handle things at a remove. You are not a pilot in your head. You are your actions.

This type of thing where voters think their vote is just a nice little I'm mad button they can press instead of an actual serious responsibility they have infuriates me
Just saw a lady quoted in a local small town paper say she signed the separatist petition even though she doesn’t want to separate but wants to “send a message” and I’m just beside myself

Like this isn’t a fucking joke lady

"Women are treated as inherently bourgeois" so succinctly and deftly sums up the resentful gender politics at the heart of the reactionary left that I'm shocked I havent seen this expressed before
"Girlboss" as an epithet was a load-bearing piece of the new societal consensus that women are inherently bourgeois and don't deserve power or status, and it needs reclamation stat before we truly return to monke on gender issues
We need to rehabilitate the "girlboss" as a concept, seeing how it took approximately 2.5 seconds for us to go from deciding they were cringe to a rapeboss taking over the world.

drilling a hole in my own skull and pouring battery acid directly into it to show the smug libs on the internet that i have imagined are my true enemies who the real activist is

i guess, fundamentally, i am just anti-crank. if your position is that normal, everyday people getting out into the streets to protest in the tens of thousands are doing it wrong, you’re a crank, and i assume you believe a lot of other crank shit i don’t care about.

once again these things boil down to “is your group a bohemian cultural identity” or “is your group actually trying to do things?” and the key tell is whether your activity centers on policing of in-group behavior or whether it centers on, again, tangible goals

to be kind of blunt, if the hardcore veteran activist organizer expertise that you bring results in "light a dumpster on fire, get mad that this is filmed" it's not really expertise anyone should respect, sorry. don't care how many little activism merit badges you have.

It's really cool how any time that someone does something ethically dubious in service of a political cause the hikikomori leftists of the world turn it into an abstract conversation about violence versus nonviolence instead of "was this act, specifically, ok"

We need to shut down the word "performative" until we can figure out what the hell is going on. Of course adopting symbols of protest and resistance is performative! Performance is a core strategy for mass movements!! That's why the call them demonstrations!!!
"In response to criticisms she's heard about the hat being 'performative,' Mashaal, the shop owner, said the thousands of dollars that have gone toward supporting their community speaks for itself."

The post-Me Too era has really taught me that the underlying issue with the persistence of sexual violence isn’t exactly women’s credibility, as the “believe women” slogan suggested, but rather with rape’s moral status. It’s not that people think it doesn’t happen. They think it doesn’t matter.
It's disturbing to see many of the the major figures in moral cognition all over the Epstein files

He was friendly with a huge number of the leading figures in the field, including giving millions to their labs, long after he pled guilty to sexually abusing young girls

Qanon was never about taking down actual pedophiles and pursuing justice for victims. It was about smearing any and all prominent liberal figures while protecting and empowering actual pedophiles. Qanon was a movement of pedophiles, protecting pedophiles.

They believe that the trade-off for wealth/power is to be a bad person, so if they see somebody who accomplished either of those things, or especially more than they did, without being a bad person, it actually suggests that they could've been good people. They won't forgive this.

politicians aren't "owed" anything. they are public servants. "but i'd be sad if i retired" who CARES.

if you're out here doing the business of political agitation--you too have responsibilities. "but i'd be SAD if i was held accountable for the results of my choices--" tough tuna.

my increasingly curmudgeonly take is that we all, in fact, have responsibilities. politics isn't an arena for self-actualization. it's an arena for public service. this is as true of voters as it is of politicians.
Ps: a common refrain that you'll hear is that "you're saying the Dems can't be at fault, it's the voters, as if the voters owe something to politicians and not the other way around!"

Yes, actually, that's how the social contract of democracy works. Voters yet the government they work for. Or don't.
