Yeah, and it's weird that everybody accepts this as true without qualification but it's the same people who keep making other mistaken statements about the behavior of the poor in their own countries.

It's taken for granted that when people are in bad enough circumstances, they become terrorists because they have nothing else to live for, but actually that doesn't seem to be the pattern at all.

It's food and we should share it and what matters is if the food matters to you. If your mom made tacos, it doesn't matter if you're ethically Bosnian, you can have a meaningful cultural relationship to tacos.

I remember when I was young I used to think, God I am so sick of my grandparents talking about how a candy bar used to be a nickel. I swear I'm never gonna be that guy. And then I became that guy. So it's always been something people think about.

Nobody's claiming that the average person thinks, "due to changes in the interest rate environment, I suddenly am burdened with an additional $224 worth of interest every month". Just that a lot of people said "I used to be able to buy thing and now I can't?? Economy bad!"

The world is complicated, and people can be made to blame sort of whatever. Teasing out actual trends and actual problems is extremely difficult.

(if you're genuinely poor, you probably never got access to the amount of credit that makes this a huge problem for you in absolute terms, although there is also a really big relative difference between a credit card that charges 14% and 22%.)

People who whine online love to focus on renters and rent increases, or public transport or w/e, but actually to this day, the people who have been dealing with the most unavoidable additional stressors have been the professional class but you're not allowed to say that.
