FF & FG have had literally over 100 unbroken years of governance to do something. Yet they constantly act like they popped into existence five minutes ago and throw a strop if you suggest otherwise. Refuse to govern, refuse to take responsibility, refuse to do anything except say "DONT BLAME ME"

To suggest that a country as wet and flood-prone as Ireland shouldn't have established mechanisms in place for rapid delivery of flood relief is absolutely nuts. This isn't a surprise act of God. It's common.
Disaster preparedness should be a basic aspect of any government's portfolio. #Spéirgorm
The Government cannot "wave a magic wand and just deliver" flood relief schemes, Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said, as he visited affected homes and businesses in Co Wexford

“Every day, I lead with purpose and devotion,” she says, meaning nothing. Melania’s chronicle of her own life in and around the White House has a vague and eerie ChatGPT-like quality—anodyne statements full of clichés seemingly drafted for an educational video for third graders.
Some brave journalists go to war zones and get shot at. I went to the Melania movie, and would probably opt for being shot at over having to sit through it again www.thenation.com/article/cult...

Followup: this thread is getting re-posed in German, Swedish, Norwegian and French because apparently governments across Europe are contemplating contracts with Palantir.

Europe, do me a favor and don't contribute to a worldwide tyranny machine.

Takeaway:
Any time the Trump administration says "AI" or anything about software or data, what you should hear is "repression as a service"

This has 2 parts:
1. AI as an excuse to consolidate data
2. AI to execute orders that humans would refuse

Voter data unlocks the possibility of ICE targeting key polling precincts, swing districts, election officials or individual voters. ICE leadership could conceivably order voter repression up at any address, like an Uber.

Data protection, as a concept, grew out of post-war legal scholarship in Germany which reflected on the use of data about people by the Nazi Govt, and formulated a set of limits on data use which recognised that to collect and use data about people was to impact the people’s lives.
If anyone doubts how prescient and important the German Constitutional Court‘s 1983 decision on self-determination regarding information was - the US offers a powerful example of how things can go wrong
A manual for ICE's immigrant-targeting computer system, Palantir ELITE, was leaked today.

Let's look at it, then step back to evaluate how far we've come along a dangerous road and where that road might take us. 🧵

My fave Kubrick anecdote: David Prowse on acting in A Clockwork Orange:
'So you want me to carry Patrick Magee, who weighs 17Olbs, plus the wheelchair, another 30lbs, so 200lbs, down the stairs & then do a dialogue scene?'
'Yeah, you can do it.'
'I know but your name isn't One Take Kubrick, is it?'

You can test new tech ideas using the Seinfeld Test

Would the product eliminate the plot of an episode? (Google maps, cell phones, paypal, battery packs)

Good tech.

Would the product inspire new Seinfeld plots? (NFTs, AI chatbots, crypto currency, blindboxes, metaverse land sales)

Bad tech.

How? How do you double-check the accuracy, if you're not already an expert? Ask a different GenAI? Or do you, you know... Have to go and do the research you would have done anyway, pre-AI? Because I'm buggered if I can think of how you do that in a way where the GenAI saved you time.

Lauren forgot to include guitar repair and maintenence
every time i see a white guy in their fifties radicalized by the twitter algorithm into racism and extremism i think about how it's a total failure of the youtube algorithm to instead radicalize him into home brewing, elaborate A/V setups, or DIY solar

🤦‍♀️ Science is science. Data are data.
Met Eireann publish the math. It's up to others to make the judgement call: local authorities, government 🤷‍♀️
Minister James Browne said Met Éireann needs to make a 'judgement call' rather than solely relying on mathematical formulas when it comes to issuing weather warnings jrnl.ie/6940649
Housing Minister criticises Met Éireann for 'withholding information' on severity of floods
The flooding mainly affected Co Wexford, Co Wicklow, and south Dublin.

We need to get real. Met Éireann is not to blame for flooding damage - poor planning, building on flood plains, not implementing over 20 years of remedial action are. We were warned decades ago winter rain would increase, but continued doing nothing and built on space needed for water #spéirghorm

Not a rugby person, but this made me smile in what is a very grim time line at the moment 💜
It appears this is actually two teams - Cardiff Lions, a gay/inclusive team, and 'Diff Drag, a team of local drag queens, who play an annual charity match. Glorious.
The Cardiff Lions do an annual Drag Rugby charity match for children’s charities and it’s as beautiful as you imagined

OK so in 1992 a girl I know went with her brother to Lepre-con and she was one of the only girls there. The shy nerdy boys acted like she was the goddess Aphrodite and it did wonders for her self-confidence. Then one boy approached her with a figurine and said "I have painted you an orc".

This isn't a company, it's a performance.

Altman et al have spent the last few years building out offices, staffing with overpaid chuds, appearing at conferences, at Davos, everywhere, inviting academics like Pavlo to their fancy offices, etc., etc. On and on.

All of it a kabuki performance.
