It’s being used to surveil and terrorize people at home and abroad. Google for example — and other large companies — has provided AI systems for the American and Israeli militaries. The DHS and ICE are using it to track and kidnap people.

The other ideas of what it can do is PR. This is what it is

In THEORY the point of jail is to make sure people show up to court - but since 2018 LASD has often failed to get them there

At one point >80% of buses were broken & 1/3 of inmates were missing court dates. My latest @latimes.com is a deep dive on how it came to this

L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. can't get inmates to court on time, angering judges, delaying justice
Moving defendants from jails to courts is one of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department's main responsibilities. For more than half a decade, it's struggled to get that done, infuriating lawyers, advoca...

Assuming you're not intentionally a transphobe, please just ditch Harry Potter. There's plenty of much, MUCH better-written fantasy made by authors who aren't absolute shit.

And if you ARE intentionally a transphobe, kindly either fuck off or educate yourself, whichever you're capable of.

Really impossible to overstate the extent to which this is a movement fixated on the belief that they have an inviolable right to abuse their children
Abigail Shrier has released a new book, the central premise of which appears to be that therapy and mental healthcare more broadly has ruined a generation of children. She reports embarking on this process after being aghast someone would administer a basic MH screen to her son.

I think the "necessity of exposing monstrous views" is a belief somberly held by people who haven't yet realized that fascists should be shot, not embarrassed (they can't be) or "defeated in the market place of ideas" (not a real thing that happens).

so instead of meeting my writing deadlines I'm archiving the thousands of stories I've written for Motherboard over the years because Vice was run into the ground by by a bunch of failson trust fund brunchlords who are now rumored to be on the cusp of deleting everything

If you think it's a false equivalence, that worse things would happen in the heathen Orient, then man just take a look at the headlines for all the artists, administrators and university professors whose careers have been immediately killed off for calling what the IDF is doing in Gaza a genocide
Yes. Censorship by chilling effect is very efficient from the point of view of the state. You don't need* to send cops to bang on people's doors when e.g. your institutions of art will police their own students and artists for mentioning Palestine hyperallergic.com/867465/artis...

Incidentally, if you're a writer, artist, or arts-adjacent in some way and haven't heard about recent censorship crises involving these people (and this is a very incomplete list) I invite you to google the names and follow what's happening. Especially in genre, given the uh isolationist tendency
Adania Shibli, Candice Breitz, Anais Duplan, Ranjit Hoskote, Avril Corroon, Johanna Tagada, Wanda Nanibush, Amin Husain … also, Arts Council England (a public funding body) has just officially updated their grant guidelines to ban politics lol
