Trump’s foreign policy isn’t “noninterventionism,” it is a kind of neo neo conservatism devoted to imposing authoritarian ethnonationalism abroad instead of democracy (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

In general anglo Canada needs to embrace French more. Bilingualism is a good trait of a healthy society and would provide an important cultural firewall against Americanism.

I remember around 22 or so we talking about which decision would be “Roberts’ dred Scott” but the birth right citizenship case would literally just be dred Scott again

On this day in 1989, an armed gunman murdered 14 women at École Polytechnique de Montréal. Another ten women and four men were injured.
The anniversary of the massacre is commemorated annually on Dec. 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

growing problem for the dems is that their voters want progressive candidates but the party leadership generally doesn't. so there's no structure to identify and vet good progressive candidates until it's too late.
The noisiest Dem primary so far is probably Maine Senate, and here for instance I think it’s useful to see that despite all the bad publicity Platner still appears to be the favorite:

TN07 is a story about gerrymandering: the GOP cracked Nashville into 3 districts when it redrew the 2022 map, destroying the Dem seat there.

Fast-forward: a section of Nashville, which just 5 years ago had a Dem representative, is now voting Dem by huge margins but it's been designed to not matter.

what i suspect here is that for Trump himself, accusations of fascism are viewed as "keyfabe" by either side
During his visit to the White House, NYC Mayor-elect Mamdani was asked about a recent interview in which he called President Trump a fascist. Mamdani began to answer the question before Trump jokingly cut him off.

So funny how the WSJ is the only paper of record doing actually investigative reporting on the administration
1) Ethics officials at Fannie Mae investigate how Bill Pulte got Letitia James mortgage docs
2) They send findings to Inspector Gen. of FHFA, which Pulte heads
3) IG sends it to Lindsay Halligan, new USA prosecuting James
4) IG and ethics officials are all fired.

FHFA’s acting inspector general handed the probe report to the U.S. attorney office that had indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James.

it's very funny that the vibecession is happening to Trump except it's actually his fault because he made the specific, explicit promise to lower nominal prices and then did tariffs for no reason

As someone on the record for generally not believing in rotating villain theory, if you think that there were exactly enough defections to make it 60-40 and these defections all coincidentally came from Democrats who are retiring/not up for a while, you're a mark

Cant think of a statement that more epitomizes just how broken of an institution the senate actually is
Durbin said critics of his vote “need to understand how the Senate works”

The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it.

Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.
so currently defectors are:

Kaine (2030)
Shaheen (Retiring)
Hasan (2028)
Fetterman (2028)
Durbin (Retiring)
CCM (2028)
Rosen (2030)
King (2030)

there is a world in which it would make sense for Dems to cave and help reopen the government, for example, if we just got crushed in VA/NJ and voters were blaming us for the shutdown

we are not in that world. we are in the opposite world. trump is taking all the blame and flailing. jesus christ

basically every 2024 truism is dead. Trump did not build a lasting multiracial coalition or turn young men into committed Republicans. You don’t need to cave on trans rights to win. The pundits have nothing left to tell you.
