A bunch of SSDs are apparently failing after a recent Windows patch.
Microsoft says it’s not them, and their metrics aren’t showing any abnormal increases in hardware failures.
Phison, a component manufacturer commonly used in many of the drives that are failing, say they can’t repro any issue.

I considered writing a long carefully constructed argument laying out the harms and limitations of AI, but instead I wrote about being a hater. Only humans can be haters.

I am an AI hater. This is considered rude, but I do not care, because I am a hater.

To Australians concerned about the under-16 social media ban, especially after seeing the effects of the UK's Online Safety, I emailed Electronic Frontiers Australia and they suggested contacting your local MP, senator, or to the minister behind it, Anika Wells.

If you're not familiar, the bill in question here was pushed through in about a week with hardly any consultations and was very problematically worded.
A number of orgs, including Electronic Frontiers Australia, condemned it. #FreeSpeech #australia

endesafety.au Contrary to their name, there have been times when the FSU have said things to the detriment of free speech, however, they are right here. Julie generally behaves like a censorious politician. #FreeSpeech #australia

I personally feel - based off EFF / Electronic Frontiers Australia - that it was rushed as a smokescreen for pushing digital ID to access social media on everyone, and eliminate anonymity. It opens the door to 'we all have to prove we're not 16.' I hope I'm wrong!!

Electronic Frontiers Australia has taken a big swing at Australia's teen social media ban tech trial, with EFA chair John Pane saying there are "serious concerns about the project's methodology".
The trial has finished its report and given it to government, but is not yet public

Beginning to see the implications of this in UK and Mississippi..of course it won’t work, it was never about that
As Australia rolls out a ban on social media for kids under 16, tech companies face steep fines and teens face life without TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms. Will it work?

the other wrinkle in all these "we're banning porn for UK users!" and "bluesky isn't available in mississippi" stories that no one seems to be talking about:
geo-ip is inaccurate as shit, even before VPNs get involved. you can't just detect where people are with any kind of consistency

This is good. Saying we fucked up is the hardest thing to do and I credit Wired for talking about this directly.
It was kind of ironic this dropped the same day they published that story about sending one of their employees to AI vibe code or whatever lol

Software Estimation is a response to a range of often unexamined questions, and it's rarely the best answer to any. Yet many hold onto it like a life preserver. Why it falls short and alternatives.
Estimation does not help us learn how well our software will meet its aims; putting software into use does.

observation from working on a few solo side projects over the years - these things are incredibly slow, not because of the "solo" part, but because of the "side" part (the "solo" part in fact helps balance it out a bit).
