The Wheel of Time book 10. Been a while but, I remember book 9 having a cliffhanger of sorts... Got halfway in to book 10 and not one mention of anything from book 9 or previous at all. It pissed me off so much I put it down and still have never revisited the series. Maybe I should try again though
Screw your favorite book, which was the first that upset you?

A Wrinkle in Time was mine. The possessed baby scared the everloving shit out of me. My babysitter had to call my mom to come home early because I was hysterical.

It seems Tesla is detecting vehicles that may have problems, and artificially running their odometers faster so the warranty expires before they have to do any service

Just incredible grift

old Soviet joke for our times:

Guy stops by the newsstand every day, scans the front page, doesn’t buy the paper. One day the vendor asks what he’s up to.

Guy says: “looking for an obituary.”

Vendor says “those are towards the back of the paper, comrade.”

Guy says: “not the one I’m looking for.”

Is there any greater pleasure than seeing someone who's been driving like a knobhead get flashed by a speed camera because they weren't actually paying attention to the road signs and were too busy tailgating?

You don't get to
- teach generations of people surveillance is normal
- support personal data as a reasonable cost for convenience
- refuse to regulate corps using that data maliciously

and then act shocked when people don't think giving their personal data to a potential malefactor is a bad thing.
I’m concerned that Americans are flocking to a number of adversary-owned social media platforms. We still need a comprehensive and risk-based approach to assessing and mitigating the risks of foreign-owned apps.

Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

Earlier on, I asked a question, looking for a source for a quote. Someone helpfully asked Chat GPT. The answer it gave was 100% wrong. (The answer that humans gave was right.)

Please stop asking it.

It doesn’t work. And it doesn’t help. Bad arseholes want you to use it. So stop. And everyone wins.

there needs to be a specific term for this, for when successful countermeasures are later taken as evidence that the issue was overblown. See: Y2K, the Ozone Hole, Vaccines. Hindblight or something.
DAMMIT NPR.

I spent nine months upgrading over TEN THOUSAND desktops at a F500 client. The grand total was over SEVENTY THOUSAND applications upgraded.

Y2K "didn't live up to the hype" because the industry busted ass to duct tape everything first.

People feared the computer glitch would mean "the end of the world as we know it." Thankfully, Y2K didn't live up to the hype after years and billions of dollars were spent on painstaking preparation.

My dad was against us having consoles in the house, instead we had an Amiga 1200 and I played games on that

My first console was actually a Dreamcast, which had some of the best 4-player gaming experiences ever. Spent many a day getting 3 friends together and playing games like Power Stone
Which video game console was your very first and is it still special to you?
