Did anyone on the production team pause to consider the narrative consequences of that? Did they think, "Hey! Wasn't a big part of the original debate here about whether a privileged white author was persistently centering herself and aggressively adopting a victim pose in response to criticism?" 3/

God, the whole article is so deeply dishonest. Clanchy's book was "suddenly derided" - no mention that the "sudden" trigger was Clanchy loudly demanding an obscure Goodreads review be taken down b/c of racist quotes she claimed were made up, prompting everyone to check and find out they were genuine

Emily Maitlis seems unable to apply the same standard to her (or the media's, more generally) coverage of "trans issues" 🤔

In fact, it's worse than that. Her starting point is simply that healthcare experts are wrong, for #reasons, and she and her fellow GC journos are brave for pointing it out.

When I was 37 I was dating a woman who was 19. The thing that inspired me to break things off was hearing Pearl Jam's "Alive" on the radio - a song released 9 years before her birth she had never heard . In that moment I realized things would never work.

The last thing we need is to be surrounded by rape jokes with a visual component.

Fatma is trying to take care of the older parents of her and her husband and her grandfather- they all have significant health concerns. They are all living in a tent with her extended family.
I’m sharing a Palestinian account every day and today is Fatma. Fatma and her husband had a small grocery store before the war which was destroyed along with their home. She is taking care of her daughter Lolo, 4 as well as their parents and Fatma’s grandfather all of whom have health challenges

Today is a good day to remember, and to say, that the #MeToo movement was right, and was righteous, and has been vindicated over and over again. There was no overreach. There was no excess. There was no they-went-too-far.

So much work remains to be done.

We’re going back to where our home once stood, trying to rebuild life with a small tent to shelter us from the cold and wind.
We need $600 to set up this tent and cover our most basic needs.

It's wild to me that Kate Clanchy felt like she could make a living being a keen tutor to and observer of other people and yet, she seems totally unprepared to grow as a human being. Who hasn't had their unconscious prejudices challenged over their career?

Glad I'm not the only one who hasn't forgotten about Kate Clanchy.

If she were teaching in Ontario she would have at the very least been suspended by the provincial regulatory body for teachers, for her harmful and racist writing.

Another of Clanchy's defenders was Philip Pullman. Ignoring the clearly bigoted and discriminatory content of her book, which was accurately reported, he thought it appropriate to brand her critics the Taliban.

Kate Clanchy is back in the news, with a multi-part series on BBC radio to sympathetically explore her 'cancellation'

this is what will be covered up again, and the racist pile-on which followed
I see the 2021 scandal around Kate Clanchy's book "Some Kids I Taught and What They Taught Me" is back in the news as Clanchy receives an apology from the publisher of that book. Here's a reminder of the racism, Islamophobia, anti-LGBT comments, and fat shaming from the book.

What happened to Kate Clanchy? She attacked an amateur book reviewer for accurately quoting her work. Then when it was proven to be accurate, set her publishing pals on people who politely critiqued her work.

It is genuinely bonkers that Clanchy has been reframed as some sort of victim.

And, the BBC have managed to wangle an actual apology (???) out of Kate Clanchy's former publisher, whom she parted ways with not long after this controversy for the "hurt" it caused her.

You'd think a journalist might follow up and ask them what about the hurt that Clanchy caused people?
