That's pretty reasonable in my book. I'm incredibly picky about potato salad, so as a general rule of thumb I usually just avoid it in most settings.

I always feel a little bad for the person that brought that one dish that literally NOBODY touches. In many cases they should have known better, but still.

I'd never say "awful." I'd probably make suggestions. You do want to discourage ppl from bringing that same nasty dish every year.

Take a small portion but not small enough to be suspicious, then taste it where the person who made it can't see? My face won't let my hide when I eat something nasty, I fear.

One of my aunts brought her fiance and his friend who were both Nigerian. The friend decided to try chiltlins for the first time while everybody watched and the look on his face as he ate them was priceless (he hated them).
