The US government is attacking its own people (and others), but you don't have to spend your life feeling helpless or marinating in fear and fury.

In the new NEXT COMES WHAT, Andrea explains why we need to overcome the glib instincts of centrist pundits to come together in useful ways.

We’ve been living inside a 5 alarm fire for a decade. Fighting fascism is the most important thing any of us will ever do.

But if you don’t allow yourself to carve out a few minutes a day for joy or simple pleasures you’re not gonna make it.

"I’ll add right up front that nobody sane now thinks the answer to abuses at Dachau was to give the guards more training."

Essential reading from Andrea Pitzer, and while you're at it, also read her book ONE LONG NIGHT: A GLOBAL HISTORY OF CONCENTRATION CAMPS.

we wouldn't need all this EFFORT and HYPE and fucking DRAMA if this technology was even 25% as disruptive and innovative as claimed by its pitchman
I was present for the birth of the web, the explosion of personal sites, and the blogging revolution, and you know what we never had to do? Beg people to use our shit.

NYP's CEO made $26.3 million last year. That's $72,000 a day—more than many of his own staff make in a year. But the hospital says it can't afford safe nurse-to-patient ratios.

Engaging in this sort of thing is one way we can resist fascism.

"In 1910, the richest 0.00001 percent of Americans owned wealth equivalent to 4 percent of U.S. national income. Today, that number has risen to 12 percent. The wealth and power of oligarchs far exceed their Gilded Age peak."
Standing up to Trump’s Imperial Blackmail on Greenland
If the European Union wants to stop the imperial ambitions of the man in the White House, it will have to do more than protest. It will have to innovate—and that means targeting America’s oligarchs.

For MLK Day, re-upping this longish-read in which I went back a half century to delve into why my white suburban high school hosted two Black "exchange students" from the Deep South. Revelatory history through my eyes and theirs, and why this history must be taught. www.usatoday.com/in-depth/opi...
Pam's experience at my 1960s white school is the history we need to teach. Not ignore.
A Black 'exchange' student's experience at my high school shows how systemic racism is a part of all of our histories. So why aren't we teaching it?

In one of his final moves before leaving office today, NJ Gov. Phil Murphy vetoed bills aimed at protecting immigrants out of fear it would invite legal challenges from the Trump admin.

Immigrant advocates decried the decision: "ICE is already here, kidnapping people."

Phil Murphy killed a bill that'd have codified in law restrictions on how sheriffs and police can partner with ICE. Some restrictions remain in place, for now, via an attorney general directive.

“…There is some information in there that isn't familiar to a lot of people. Including that the US is currently holding three times as many people in immigration detention as were detained in the entire Nazi concentration camp system in spring 1939—six years into the Third Reich.”
I wrote about how concentration camp regimes evolve and why it's not too late to stop this, even though we are deep in it now.

Putin has normalized atrocities to the point that his crimes in Ukraine are not newsworthy.
Trump: "I should've gotten the Nobel Prize for each war, but I don't say that. I saved millions & millions of people. And don't let anybody tell you Norway doesn't control the shots, ok? It's in Norway. It's a joke. They lost such prestige. That's why I have such respect for what Maria did."
