I really think this is one of the biggest problems with online discourse. The libs of TikTok/ end Wokeness approach of just constantly bombarding you with individual anecdotes that make you feel threatened and at war.
If one person from a group does something bad there no exists a whole internet echo system that endlessly spreads the information to everyone else within the system and sadly that includes a lot of journalists and politicians.

I find it horrifying how many people support the two-child benefit cap, knowing that it forces children to live in poverty. Sometimes the voters are morally dreadful and you need to ignore them

Incredible how pretty much any sufficiently widely seen post saying "I think it's bad how people are prejudiced to trans people" inevitably attracts a whole host of replies going "But I don't see why you won't consider that trans people aren't real so prejudice against them doesn't count/matter?"
yes I don't really see how you can go "oh yikes these people have changed their political views incredibly quickly, mostly because of what Very Online people talk about on social media" and also think that people who went from never talking about gender to calling trans women predators are....normal
I don’t like subtweeting people I consider online friends, but there is a subset of people who are very worried about the ongoing radicalisation of our political elite but won’t ever acknowledge the echoes with the radicalisation of their colleagues on trans rights

you can frame the European-American differences in a lot of ways but 'Europeans are poorer than Americans but also more secure' is probably the fairest one. American life is richer in many, many ways, and also far more dependent on your job *and your family* than European life.

Acquaintance of mine with a PhD shared Candace Owen's bizarre assassination conspiracy FB post, and when gently challenged by her family member in the comments she said that with her brain mush as a new mom she hasn't been researching/verifying/reading much if at all
This is the correct take. Stewing in white supremacist propaganda is bad for your thinking. And if think you are so savvy that it won’t impact you, you are the exact kind of mark they are slowly converting (I’m looking at you, centrist pundits).
It’s really funny how a generation will roll its eyes at parents who watch Fox News but doesn’t see why being immersed in Twitter is having the same effect. Lots of serious people show up on Fox News too but that shouldn’t be your primary source on the news.

In places like Hungary and the UK, the young are decamping or are dwindling from demographic shrinkage, and the remaining home-owning elderly have completely captured the apparatus of state, which seeks to keep the whole country in amber with the exception of a rights-less servant class.

Thought experiment: January 2021 we tell all our Afghan interpreters and security forces and etc none of them will get refugee status - they're staying in Afghanistan forever. How does this affect the next eight months of US withdrawal?
"we should have screwed over all the locals we recruited to help us" should work out great next time we're in a conflict.

The Trump administration has reacted to a small scale lone wolf attack by in DC announcing a sweeping collective punishment, using the organs of government to heap blame on partisan rivals, and potentially dissuading anyone from collaborating with US forces abroad for a generation.

Brazil approves the first vaccine against dengue. The disease killed 6000 Brazilians in 2024.

This is a really remarkable achievement. I got dengue in 2015, and even with the mild case I had, it was a really miserable experience.

Every Trump appointee is committed to ignoring the difference between holding a responsible office of the United States and being a partisan advocate hack. It's bad across the board, but it's catastrophically bad in the Attorney General, the Secretary of Defense, and the Directors of the FBI & CIA.

This is wonderful news, and also means it’s time for me to beat the drum I always do when HPV vaccines make the news:

They are not only for women! HPV also causes penile, anal, and head and neck cancers. The latter are particularly deadly. Please vaccinate ALL your children.
Australia recorded ZERO cases of cervical cancer in women under 25 for the first time since they started tracking the cancer in the 80s.

This is the power of vaccines.

The HPV vaccine is extremely effective at preventing cancer.

Viruses can be oncogenic. Get your vaccines and protect yourself!
newsGP - Australia set for world-first cervical cancer elimination
Vaccination programs have played a key role, and GPs remain ‘instrumental’ in boosting screening rates to reach the 2035 target.

Funny how many ppl in Trumps admin dont seem to understand that they dont actually work for Russia
U.S. Army Sec. Driscoll warned EU diplomats that Russia is stockpiling long-range missiles, using it as leverage to push Trump’s peace plan.

He claimed the growing arsenal could soon overwhelm Ukraine’s air defenses. Critics say this flips U.S. policy on its head, pressuring the victim to settle.

I am ready to go beyond implication and say after reading the facts here that one of the most recognizable people working in the White House almost certainly had ICE arrest her nephew's mother as a favor to her brother
This article heavily implies that ICE is being used in a custody dispute to help Karoline Leavitt's brother get his son and have the mother locked up in ICE detention
"A woman with a family connection to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Revere, Massachusetts."

I can’t speculate on the shooter’s motives, but I’ve experienced the PTSD that comes from being part of an occupying force, and I can only imagine it’s a hundred times worse being the one occupied.

If I still struggle to sit through fireworks, imagine the sight of US soldiers patrolling your city.
the invasion of Afghanistan is among the most horrific recent chapters of the long history of elite impunity in the US. this coda is grim but fitting - the govt practically explicitly affirming that it should only be Afghans who live with the consequences amid fading public memory of the atrocity
