Recently, I’ve decided that if I feel super unwell, I take the day off. And by allowing myself to do completely nothing, I often find can catch up easily the next day. So for me, those body breaks are really important. (I also factor in those breaks when planning deadlines.) #SpoonieAuthChat

I usually start by reverse-outlining, or perhaps writing a synopsis, because it's better to fix high-level problems like a messed-up structure before you go for individual words. (i.e., do your dev editing before you do line edits) #SpoonieAuthChat

I look for overused and unnecessary words like just, now, very, and really. While I like reading things out loud to feel the beats of dialogue, I also like having my screen reader read back to me. Or having somebody else read my words back to me. It’s a great way to catch things! #SpoonieAuthChat

A big piece I have for self-editing is to read your work aloud. You hear things your brain skips over when reading to yourself. It also points out clunky wording. #SpoonieAuthChat

Read your manuscript out loud or have a screen reader do it. Listening to it will help you catch crutch words that need to be removed and also let you know if particular passages are difficult for readers to get through. #SpoonieAuthChat

Read your story out loud. That will help you to catch repeated words and awkward phrasing. Better yet, read the story aloud, record it, and listen to it played back.

A large glass of water, plus a cup of tea and a heated blanket if it's cold. I always concentrate better writing on the sofa, it's so luch more comfortable than sitting at my desk.

Oh, I write on a couch, under a blanket (or sheet, depending on the time of year), and quite possibly with a mug of coffee. #SpoonieAuthChat

I listen to a playlist of songs that set a mood I’m writing that day (action, fear, sadness, love, etc…) & have a steaming mug of hot water or herbal tea. Gotta have a warm, cozy blanket too. #SpoonieAuthChat

Absolutely must be a beverage close to hand. Often tea, but always a bottle of water.

And a snack. I favor cookies, especially if tea, but sometimes it's an actual meal.

Writing cannot start until I have checked that the air vent is closed/opened so I don't freeze to death.

Then Tonks needs to get settled on her chair.

Put my water bottle that I'll ignore on the desk.

And then queue up the chosen playlist for the day.

Getting back into freelance editing really lets me focus on something positive for my brain. I think it’s because I get to read cool books while helping them shine. It feels like building up when so much these days is about tearing down. Books are essential to our health, imo. #SpoonieAuthChat
