Bonus there's not really any compelling reason to upgrade them anymore.
It's funny - when the corporate world is monetising things that should be free, offloading all the costs onto the public to increase their profits + increase inflation, paying as little as possible , where do they think people are gonna get the money they want to extract from them?
'the economy' is people burning through slabs of glass and silicon at an absurd rate even though they don't need or want to

The Center for an Informed Public is a bright spot in the current gloom about researching our modern information environment. Definitely encourage early career researchers from all sorts of disciplines to apply.
The UW Center for an Informed Public is looking for postdocs (for 2026-2028) from across diverse disciplines whose research sheds light on the challenges of our modern information environment, promotes civic health, and/or helps people/communities navigate online spaces: apply.interfolio.com/177901

This is very good. Clear, calm, factual, and devastating for proponents of bans on puberty blockers for trans youth.

Puberty blockers: why politicians overriding doctors sets a dangerous precedent
The government’s ban on puberty blockers undermines clinical expertise and targets trans youth with a policy that lacks evidence, consistency and fairness.

Yeah... the amount of times I have to manually retype things (even with autocorrect turned off) has gotten out of hand.

Despite being a "tech person" my whole life, I'm starting to question even keeping a smartphone anymore.
Spell check is integrating AI all over the place, it's also why a lot of keyboards' autocorrect and grammar checking has gotten WAY worse

Tech companies: AI is the future! You must embrace it or risk being left behind!

Also tech companies: Our AI products suck so much that we must actively bully our customers into using them.

Tech companies are just big babies who want our data. It's fine, Google can just lose the rest of my business if it doesn't want to sell useful services anymore.

Good evening all. For this year's Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR), TFR remembers three transfeminine authors who passed away this year: Miss Major Griffin-Gracy (78), Valerie Amelia Thompson (38), and Michelle Duff (85) 🖤

We also remember 367+ victims of anti-trans violence and suicide 🕯️

I really do think that it’s outrageous that people who had their hard work stolen are only being offered $1500 as compensation
Hey authors! Check to see if Anthropic stole your book to train their slop generator on. You’re entitled to $1500 per stolen Work.

Look up your work, and if you’re in the database, file a claim

Re-meditating on Weiser and Brown's Coming Age of Calm Technology. There was a vision there and we somehow ended up with anxious technology instead of calm technology. But this is all founded on us needing *more* information and... I think maybe we don't so much.

This is an excellent read and the notion of "critical washing" is incredibly useful.
"Critical washing" is "encouraging AI use while being 'aware of the risks'".

The media fuels moral panic about trans people while ignoring the epidemic of male violence that takes women’s lives. We see through it - and we refuse to be divided for clicks and profit.

This image is from the NION Women letter. If you agree, read the full letter and add your name in solidarity

this goes right along with my theory that the AI obsession in *users* is often bc…

1. they were never educated (esp "ipad generation") & don't know how computers work

2. our tools and services are all SO AWFUL NOW, degraded at best, actively user-hostile at worst

A thing that really bugs me about the iOS swipe keyboard is that I'm set for Australian English everywhere, but when I write words, swiping correctly, it spells them in American English. Then it marks them misspelt. 😫

This is a #mood!

Getting my ADHD diagnosis was every bit as life altering as cracking my gender egg. Both discoveries gave me the ability to decode things about myself that I'd never understood before. Both forced me to revisit a lifetime of shame and confusion with kindness and acceptance.
Remembering that time I was celebrating my formal diagnosis of ADHD and someone came tried to shame me for "glorifying a disability" and I was all MOTHERFUCKER I AM CELEBRATING THAT I FINALLY HAVE A NAME FOR WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY BRAIN CAN YOU AND YOUR MORALIZING BULLSHIT KINDLY FUCK OFF INTO THE SUN

Blaming artists because they post their work on the internet so it's ok to steal from them is so twisted and disgusting.

Stealing all the artwork without any consent and not paying any artist at all, and then feeding it to the plagiarizing machine is disgusting.

reminder that trans people have the boot of genocide on our necks right now and it's damn hard to manage on a day to day basis

please fight for us, support us, or at the very least be kind to us and offer us care
NHS Sussex are forcibly detransitioning trans people. These patients need full restoration of their healthcare, and everyone involved in doing this needs to be sacked.
"Laura fears all will be lost if ICB Sussex forces her child off the medication.

If ICB Sussex get their own way in a matter of weeks and they force detransition, Olive may well take her life."
