I think the fact that these things fry people’s brains, drive people to suicide, are being marketed as a replacement for people’s jobs, literally cannot make money no matter how many people use them, and will only try to wring more money out of an increasingly poor populace might drive some backlash

Bonus there's not really any compelling reason to upgrade them anymore.
It's funny - when the corporate world is monetising things that should be free, offloading all the costs onto the public to increase their profits + increase inflation, paying as little as possible , where do they think people are gonna get the money they want to extract from them?
'the economy' is people burning through slabs of glass and silicon at an absurd rate even though they don't need or want to

The UW Center for an Informed Public is looking for postdocs (for 2026-2028) from across diverse disciplines whose research sheds light on the challenges of our modern information environment, promotes civic health, and/or helps people/communities navigate online spaces: apply.interfolio.com/177901

This is very good. Clear, calm, factual, and devastating for proponents of bans on puberty blockers for trans youth.

Puberty blockers: why politicians overriding doctors sets a dangerous precedent
The government’s ban on puberty blockers undermines clinical expertise and targets trans youth with a policy that lacks evidence, consistency and fairness.

Yeah... the amount of times I have to manually retype things (even with autocorrect turned off) has gotten out of hand.

Despite being a "tech person" my whole life, I'm starting to question even keeping a smartphone anymore.
Spell check is integrating AI all over the place, it's also why a lot of keyboards' autocorrect and grammar checking has gotten WAY worse

Tech companies: AI is the future! You must embrace it or risk being left behind!

Also tech companies: Our AI products suck so much that we must actively bully our customers into using them.

Tech companies are just big babies who want our data. It's fine, Google can just lose the rest of my business if it doesn't want to sell useful services anymore.

Good evening all. For this year's Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR), TFR remembers three transfeminine authors who passed away this year: Miss Major Griffin-Gracy (78), Valerie Amelia Thompson (38), and Michelle Duff (85) 🖤

We also remember 367+ victims of anti-trans violence and suicide 🕯️

I really do think that it’s outrageous that people who had their hard work stolen are only being offered $1500 as compensation
Hey authors! Check to see if Anthropic stole your book to train their slop generator on. You’re entitled to $1500 per stolen Work.

Re-meditating on Weiser and Brown's Coming Age of Calm Technology. There was a vision there and we somehow ended up with anxious technology instead of calm technology. But this is all founded on us needing *more* information and... I think maybe we don't so much.

This is an excellent read and the notion of "critical washing" is incredibly useful.
"Critical washing" is "encouraging AI use while being 'aware of the risks'".

The media fuels moral panic about trans people while ignoring the epidemic of male violence that takes women’s lives. We see through it - and we refuse to be divided for clicks and profit.

this goes right along with my theory that the AI obsession in *users* is often bc…

1. they were never educated (esp "ipad generation") & don't know how computers work

2. our tools and services are all SO AWFUL NOW, degraded at best, actively user-hostile at worst

A thing that really bugs me about the iOS swipe keyboard is that I'm set for Australian English everywhere, but when I write words, swiping correctly, it spells them in American English. Then it marks them misspelt. 😫
