Upzone everything.
Blue MAGA really needs to stop with this stuff. Afghan refugees have plenty of reasons to do something awful because of things that are out in the open.
I fucking guarantee you that the shooter was told he would have to do a favor for Donald Trump if he was granted asylum. I guarantee it

The problem with ICE is not that it's targeting people who aren't criminals. The problem with ICE is that it's an unaccountable secret deportation police. It cannot be reformed under a better president. It can be made less terrible, but the instrument of repression remains for the next tyrant.

No one shld lose sight of the fact that the Guard was only in DC as part of an extended political messaging stunt. The shooter is guilty for the attacks/carnage. Donald Trump is responsible for them. This is the collateral damage of Trump abusing his powers as President.
Pirro: "These Guardsmen and all who are here to protect the District are the line that separates a civilized society from a barbaric one."

Dire traffic jams + bus lane enforcement could actually be great for urbanism.
Robotaxis will tranform cities more than we yet realise: my latest for @economist.com
— The tech will get cheaper. Dire traffic jams unless cities learn to love congestion taxes
— Denser city centres (few parking lots), but also more sprawl
— Cycling gets safer

one thing I will say, optimistically, is that as many people as there are who are absolutely addicted to losing, there are some people — some I’m not usually in agreement with — who seem to be sick of it

Why don’t people just join a library?
These are pretty naked -- and therefore instructive -- examples of the sorts of defenses that people offer to try and get off the hook

Can I sneer that the utility isn’t particularly high?
scorn was an effective weapon for the monkey jpeg NFT shit because it was effectively a status good, generative AI is a tool that millions get utility out of daily and you can't sneer your way out of that.

big late breaking news: the market monitor for the largest energy grid in the u.s., covering much of the midwest and mid-atlantic, has called to block new data centers connections to the grid, saying current course of growth assures regular blackouts
No more PJM data centers unless they can be reliably served: market monitor
The PJM Interconnection’s market monitor urged the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to rule that large data centers can only come online if the grid operator can still meet reliability metrics.

They should really be expelled from polite society but I’m increasingly realizing that this is what polite society is and maybe also what accelerationism is?
Fuck Olivia Nuzzi. Fuck Ryan Lizza. Fuck the elite media ecosystem that enables those psychopaths.

If your argument involves referring to Americans as “USians” it doesn’t matter how cogent the rest of your point may be tbh

I don‘t think the public will become less transphobic but i do think culture war shit against such a small group is essentially a luxury good and with a bad economy they’ll stop giving a shit.
I think Democrats should double down on trans rights now. It's obvious that most voters don't care about it so you might as well stick with your principles and goad Republicans into focusing on it at the expense of everything else so they're the ones who look like freaks.

Good thread. What about guys who were Mets for a very short time but were Real Mets?

Recently, Mark Canha and Jesse Winker.

Farther back? Having trouble thinking of any established guys, am just thinking of homegrown over-achievers like Agbayani.
Other guys can play for the Mets, and are never actually Mets. Like Glavine. Tom Glavine was on the Mets for 4 years, but at no point was he a Met.

Tfw you think a guy was a solid 21ish win guy and he was a 7.2 win guy.

Interesting back and forth here today: should childcare be considered a necessity? Working in the utilities space, I see this similar to energy poverty. Yes, if you have limited means you can lower the heat to 58 degrees and bundle up. But that’s also something we should seek to avoid.
Families are routinely forced to mitigate the circumstances of economic hardship, including relying on family for childcare. Acting like that’s an unrealistic expectation and choosing to fully fund every living metric to assess poverty standards instead is going to result in skewed numbers.

This, plus they produce bad work.
I don't understand how anyone can watch how blatantly Grok is manipulated to answer the way ownership desires it to and then act like the other LLM chatbots couldn't possibly be similarly but less obviously compromised to produce responses in whatever way corporate interests and priorities dictate.

If I’m understanding this correctly, X is owned by a white nationalist who pays poor people of color in developing countries to pretend to be working class white Americans to scare other white Americans into being afraid poor people of color from developing countries are going to ruin America?

Green tech use case: extremely clear, near-free energy.

GenAI use case: rather vague, powerful search engine and analyst-level analysis?

Welp.
America putting most of its eggs in the generative AI basket, China going hard into green tech. When history looks back on this period, someone is going to look awfully stupid.

My great-great-grandfather took the cattle to Chicago to sell, gambled all his money away, never to be heard from again. My fatherless great-grandfather grew up to become a minister and a father to more ministers. Eventually we moved to New England and followed our destiny as agnostic moralizers.
it is interesting, all family trees have that one ancestor they're really ashamed of, and now we're seeing the making of those ancestors in realtime. three, four, five generations down the road these will be the people everyone wishes they didn't have blood-ties to and skims over their lives.
DOJ is now recruiting for immigration judges by calling them “deportation judges.”

That’s seems really bad.

Beyond the gubernatorial (which was a foregone conclusion), I’m wondering if it helps down ballot to have Trump neutralize the scary Muslim narrative for Upstate and Long Island voters. Easy to run a targeted social media campaign showing Trump being chummy with Zohran.
The Hochul campaign is out with a statement regarding President Trump's disagreement with Rep. Elise Stefanik calling Zohran Mamdani a "jihadist." Comms Director Sarafina Chitika says Trump "nuked her opening argument" in Stefanik's bid for governor

That aside, it’s *not that good*. Energy use aside, copyright violations aside, impact on jobs aside, we need to talk more about how the outputs are context-free mediocrity and aren’t going to get any better with more data. Even anti-AI people too often accept the bulls’ job killer narrative.
“Big Tech is actively promoting the integration of generative AI across all sectors of life—public & private, personal & professional—with little regard for whether we can sustain the infrastructure behind this,” says @jillmcardle.bsky.social in new @reset.org.
