People want a “yes or no” answer to the question of making a full-time income by being an author, but the REAL answer is “it depends.”
I know everyone hates nuance, but that’s the answer.

19% turned into 59% overnight that's two months paid for and some help towards the next month. So that's amazing in just a day of having this up.

I know things are tough all around so it means a lot that people are willing and able to help.

This is quite possibly the best academic research article I have ever read. Highly recommended to the thinking reader (or anyone else with a bit of spare time on their hands).

Thank you @penamerica.bsky.social for taking the time to talk to people actually involved in the creation of young adult literature about this issue. It’s been a difficult few years, and we’re grateful to be heard.
Book bans often target YA titles with sexual content. In a new interview, @penguinrandomhouse.bsky.social editor Andrew Karre explains that these books offer teens a safe, ethical way to learn about their desires and experiences — and merit their place on library shelves. pen.org/andrew-karre...

Hey! Hey you there! Have you backed up your files lately? Stop putting it off! Make a copy to keep safe somewhere!

I don't want you to lose your work, that would suck.

I can only imagine the people who get mad at a romance for having a happy ending also get mad when an Italian restaurant doesn't serve sushi. You are in the wrong place for the thing you want and that's on you!
I saw the most bonkers conversation on tiktok where people were arguing that Romance doesn’t need an HEA and authors were fighting for their lives in the comments trying to explain what a genre convention is. Again, trying to sell me a mystery with no crime and see what happens.
God we need more craft discussions and less fights about which tropes are good or bad that play out in a way that makes it clear no one even understands what a trope is anymore.

Since we’re talking about it today…for anyone who dislikes the idea of a guaranteed HEA because it spoils your enjoyment to know how a story will end, that’s fine. It’s your right to read what you like, and maybe romance isn’t for you. But also: imagine romance books are like going on a road trip.

See also: antivaxxers who say "why don't we just inject people with a weak version of the virus instead of all those chemicals" and raw milk enthusiasts who say "why don't we just boil the milk to kill all the microbes". Congrats, you just invented the thing you neither understand nor respect.
I’ll say this much: This reads exactly like what it is: people who discovered romance five years ago and decided they had all kinds of amazing new ideas to “fix” it. Connections between books? That feel kind of cozy to the reader? How did no one ever think of that?? www.nytimes.com/2025/11/13/b...

IMO a more worthwhile conversation to have (for new or new-to-romance authors) is not whether romance needs a HEA (because IT ABSOLUTELY DOES) but what constitutes a proper HEA. What does an ending need to look like for readers to get what they're expecting? How does an author stick that landing?

I am BEGGING for more craft discussions. I miss that from golden age Twitter. Where are the #romancelandia craft discussions happening on Bluesky? I made a Bookish Discourse list of accounts that seem to indulge in it sometimes, but I'm always looking for more. Maybe we need a hashtag?

Romance should evolve, but its so clear when people want the shine and financial benefit of Romance without respecting the genre, its conventions, or the readers. It's disturbing, but not surprising that we've arrived in a place where CRAFT DOESNT MATTER is a thing people believe.

I wrote a Patreon post yesterday about how publishing is how treating romance novels as an accessory for influencers and god I hate being right. Also it’s telling that there’s a whole thread in the comments saying how mid the books are.

I'm doing this no matter what happens with SNAP. Food is a basic human right, and no one should have to worry about their next meal. Help me make a difference AND get a very queer romantasy about adventure with your found family 💜
No way am I gonna sit by quietly while people starve.

I grew up unhoused more often than not. I went hungry a lot, and when we did have food, it was thanks to programs like SNAP and foodbanks. I know what it is to be hungry, and I know how that trauma sticks your entire life.

Let's try to help.

Another successful writing retreat in the bag—5701 words in 4 days! Not as many as last time, but still a lot for me because I am a very slow writer. And all decent first draft words I can live with. Yay! I love writing on the train. 💙📚🌶️ #amwriting #romance #pnr

Help me, #Romancelandia. I need short spicy reads to get me through the end of this heinous year. Hit me with your favorite novellas. Especially #PNR, #romantasy, #sci-fi. Any relationship types are fine, but MMF/Why Choose is my catnip. Self-recs welcome.

Something I see over and over again is that writers who are confident in their art and compassionate in their life see other writers as colleagues, not competition. The contrapositive (did I get that right?) is also true: those who think other writers are competition are neither confident nor kind.
