I've definitely become a believer in the thesis that protracted COIN/irregular warfare is fundamentally corrosive to good civ-mil relations and military culture generally. Harder to inculcate respect for LoAC when most people's primary experience is fighting irregular forces.

I'm not an 'there won't be elections' doomer. I'm a long-term doomer. I think the pendulum will swing back and Dems will regain power and then face an even more hostile press than before and won't have the votes to restructure the courts and we'll be in this awful cycle for the rest of my life.

The normalization of this madness is so quick that we’re debating whether a second illegal strike was wrong after an initial illegal strike with no proof of any crime and we’ve already seen just random murders of fishermen normalized with the excuse they’re running drugs, which isn’t legal either.

Mamdani has S-tier charisma and one of the qualities of that, I think, is that he - like Clinton - genuinely and sincerely cares about you when he's talking to you. My hope is that he's one of the rare people for whom that's still true even after you're not in the room.

Trump in a room with a very charismatic person results in like half a day of Trump agreeing with everything that person said, so this has the potential to be very, very funny.

Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

I agree with whoever said a rather under-appreciated dynamic is the extent to which Professional Politics Opinion Havers flat out just find the left interpersonally irritating in a way they do not find the right so, and I think a lot of the talk of a vibe shift was wish-casting their irritants away.

The polls and numbers show THERE ARE MORE OF US THAN THERE ARE OF THEM - but that doesn't feel real and visceral to our institutions, which imagine a silent MAGA majority hiding under their bed.

You know what feels real? Ten million people in the streets, saying "Look around, THERE ARE MORE OF US"

One of my favorite poems since childhood, and a poem I share every #autumnequinox.
By the 12thc warrior poet Xin Qiji 辛棄疾, sidelined during peacetime, demoted, drifting through a decade of minor posts in remote lands.
Poetry, then, is that which is left unsaid.
“My, what a cool and lovely autumn.”

Aside from shattering core state sovereignty, it's saying one state's Guard (TX) is somehow more loyal to the national authority than another's (IL). It's treating the latter as something bordering on hostile, or at least alien. One part of the country and its soldiers are more America than another.
