This will make me sound even older than I am, but I remember my great-great aunt chopping wood on a stump every morning at dawn to fuel the big black cast-iron stove in her farmhouse kitchen.

Years later they removed it as being "unsafe," which I suppose is not unreasonable, but somehow my generation survived.
