And they said bari Weiss couldn’t push cbsnews into new formats and find new audiences
It's the least important element to this, but I find it fascinating on an aesthetic level too.

Americans are watching a bootleg broadcast that someone in Canada recorded off their TV. And people are copying it to various platforms (however imperfect visually) to get it out as widely as possible.

lots of takeaways from the 60 Minutes debacle, but here's one: support investigative journalism, public media and human rights NGOs! with one week left in the year, give now as much as you can, b/c independent voices are more important than ever.

Americans & Europeans needlessly exposing African babies to preventable diseases just to see if they can find something that would justify their preexisting antivaccine beliefs is not only unscientific and actually anti-science, it is very much reminiscent of colonialist, racist human rights abuses
“It is not clear what the research question is. It seems to be about the safety of the vaccine rather than its effectiveness, but both are already well-established, and to undertake such a study in a population where almost 1/5 of the adult population has a marker of infection seems extremely risky”

It's never "AI tools can be misused but can also help you in these specific ways," it's "if you don't get onboard you will be left behind and shunned"

No hype. No hope. Just fear
I would struggle to trust an academic who doesn‘t know how to
use AI tools.
Which is not the same as not being critical.

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

This would not have passed if those chickenshit Dems Davis, Cellar, and Gonzalez had not voted for it. They voted to put the parents of trans youth in prison for ten years.

Primary them all.
Just now, a national trans healthcare felony ban for youth has passed the US House, with 10 year prison terms.

3 Dems crossed party lines to vote to jail providers.

4 GOP crossed party lines to vote against.

It is not expected to pass the Senate, where Dems hold filibuster power.

Story to come.

When I was a medical student 45 years ago, I clerked in a 13 year old girl with deep jaundice and an abdominal mass. She was Hepatitis B positive. That had led to a primary liver tumour. In a 13-year-old. She was dead within the month. Avoidable with vaccination.
The CDC has endorsed ACIP’s decision of revoking universal access in USA to hepatitis B vaccines at birth. The policy had been in place for 34y and was changed despite no new evidence emerging of any risk of vaccination. #HealthPolicy 🧵
CDC accepts ACIP’s hepatitis B vaccine recommendations for babies
The CDC also said if a baby is not receiving a birth dose of vaccine, the initial dose should be administered no earlier than 2 months of age.

I’m not saying road designers SHOULD get charged when someone is inevitably killed on their road built only for vehicle speed

I’m saying what would roads look like if that WAS the case, and why don’t we just design them like that
A 5-lane road with no marked crossings and bus stops on both sides is just a recipe for transit users getting killed.

This is criminally bad design, and yet it's the standard practice across much of the US.

Because Trump's baseline is unhinged hatemonger, major news outlets have simply decided to grade him on a curve where only the most egregious comments, or the ones, as Mark notes, that ruffle Republican feathers get major coverage.
One of the great failures of contemporary political news coverage in a lot of media is the unspoken principle that no violation of norms or decency by Trump is really news, worthy of sustained attention, unless it also upsets people who love him. It isn't "not taking the bait"; it's sleepwalking.

Same in the US.
With influenza surging in the UK and Ireland, the fact is that the culture war nonsense surrounding masks combined with the lack of airborne mitigations in hospitals (itself a result of the political and social erasure of Covid) will lead to deaths that could have been avoided.
