Thread for those new to BlueSky. First of all, welcome. It feels like a safer space, doesn’t it? But also perhaps a bit disorienting initially? Here’s some tips for getting your bearings.

I’m sort of imagining him with an oily rag over his shoulder and a pencil behind his ear…

You won’t regret it. Best to go on a sunny day as there’s a lot of walking between the huts and a nice little lake to sit by. And you pay once and go back as much as you want for a year.

Watching the Oxford 1/2 marathon today, I was struck by the runners being of every age, gender, height, build and ethnicity in contrast to Robert Jenricks comments last week. Charity fundraisers, members of athletics clubs and individuals with a common aim to finish the run. Well done everyone.

No, he should not have shared another scientist’s data without her consent. I am judging him.

If you’re hearing news about a cancer break-through and wonder what’s hype and what’s not, here’s a good explainer of the actual findings in animal studies.

This is some elegant science that pulls together several lines of long-standing inquiry, and yes, it’s a BFD.

Kings!! Maurice Wilkins taught my husband in the 70s. Was apparently a nice guy and great teacher but looks like he was also a bit sneaky and horribly sexist.

So we’re agreed. Men Behaving Badly.

From the picture it looks like this is IN MICE, but a cautious WOW from me.

GOOD NEWS! Researchers have developed a cancer vaccine that has shown STUNNING results, PREVENTING up to 88% of MULTIPLE aggressive cancers by harnessing dual-pathway nanoparticles that train the immune system to recognize and destroy tumor cells. In some cases, it COMPLETELY prevented metastasis.

Actually I believe she was dead (from breast cancer) before anyone got it, and you can’t win a Nobel prize if dead. But I may be wrong about the timings

Oh really? The paper says that Maurice Wilkins showed Franklin’s pictures to Watson without her consent. Was she really such a girls-blouse scientist that she didn’t understand the significance of her own data? The only evidence we have in support of that hypothesis is absence of a penis.

OK I’ve done my Sunday sport (12 rounds in the ring with Reviewer 2). Got my mug of tea and bit of cake. Which Diane Keaton movie shall I watch? #academicsky

Yeah I bet he’s volunteered for lots!

He needs to be out of academia and sweeping streets

I knew he was arrogant. I didn’t know till I read that paper that he wasn’t very bright either.
