This is the core challenge with content moderation. People want it to be an objective measure, but it's not. It is always a subjective decision. You're telling people that in order to use your platform, they have to submit to your judgment. But that means you actually have to make a judgement.

I'm gonna push back on this. I feel like people fall victim to this all the time. The flaw in this reasoning is that if the platform has decided to engage in moderation, they don't need to take the word of the person that it's a joke. They need to use their own judgment and make a determination.
An additional element is that it's hard to enforce a policy on threats when an acceptable defense is "It was just a joke / cultural reference"—a defense that a bad actor could weaponize. So I can understand how you might end up with a policy that says, We simply have to apply a blanket rule.

One horrific thing to me is that the president- a man who has gotten away with everything including literal murder up to this point- seems extremely nervous about anything regarding Epstein coming out. Like how bad does it have to be

My takeaway from every new Epstein revelation is that some powerful people victimized many powerless young women, many more knew, some actively enabled it--and we're still being told that MeToo and accountability for sexual violence have gone too far

Durbin is trash. Yes, lots of great stuff in the past. Sure he’s a decent guy. But he’s pure trash now. Important to see that the bulk of Team Cave is made up of people who are retiring.
Durbin is a YES on this deal: “At Democrats’ urging, today’s bill is not the same one we’ve voted down 14 times. Republicans finally woke up and realized their Groundhog Day needed to end. This bill is not perfect, but it takes important steps to reduce their shutdown’s hurt.”

Not that he didn’t already know, but now Trump knows for sure he can roll the Dems every time and there’s no need to negotiate for anything

i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?

This really has to be the standard. Even if you voted no, if you aren’t calling for Schumer to step down then we should assume you would have been willing to vote yes.
The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it.

Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.
so currently defectors are:

Kaine (2030)
Shaheen (Retiring)
Hasan (2028)
Fetterman (2028)
Durbin (Retiring)
CCM (2028)
Rosen (2030)
King (2030)

I know this sounds mean but if you think that this is a coincidence you're more than a bit of a mark. If Kaine had been up next year, it would have been Warner, if Slotkin was retiring, Peters, etc.

In a normal democracy, a total collapse of party leadership would result in an no-confidence vote and immediate snap elections to find leaders who can lead

Reuters report says Biden was personally briefed on this towards the end of his presidency and the USG nonetheless chose not to determine that war crimes had been committed.

Pope Leo calls for ‘deep reflection’ about treatment of detained migrants in U.S.
“Many people who have lived for years and years and years, never causing problems, have been deeply affected by what is going on right now,” Chicago-born pope says.

A lot of the takes about why Mamdani's approach won't work elsewhere are so funny to me.

What I hear them saying is, "Mamdani spoke Hindi and nobody in middle America speaks Hindi" which 1. isn't true but also nobody is telling you to rip off his exact playbook

Attention has (justly) gone to the abuses in Chicago but the assaults in Los Angeles never ended. The military left but they were guarding building. DHS paramilitaries remain active in L.A. it's bad.
Don’t think ppl understand the terror the Feds are unleashing on the streets of LA right now. Roving patrols targeting vulnerable individuals. It’s horrible.

There’s no one coming to save us except ourselves.
The past week+ has been really intense in Los Angeles. We need all of the help, support, & attention we can get. Feds are literally roving the streets snatch & grabbing vulnerable individuals. It's horrific. We need to do more.
