I’m going to reiterate my view that ‘illiberal democracy’ is a mutually exclusive term.

You can face an illiberal polity where people get to vote, but that isn’t a democracy.

I can’t imagine why I feel the need to restate this at the moment.
Everyone in the US should be utterly embarrassed by this sort of fawning and grovelling over an incompetent, incoherent fascist by a conga line of suckholes.
Pirro: "Mr President, there is in this room a group of people who love you, who believe in you, and who are so proud to be in this Oval Office and to be part of this amazing day because you have changed the course of America."

"Broke ranks" isn't even true. They admitted Schumer was in the room the whole time!
JFC. Does @schumer.senate.gov not get that by caving, Democrats make it *harder,* not easier, to make the ACA subsidies expiring stick politically to Trump/GOP? This effort to shame Republicans in this context risks signaling to low-info voters that Rs are standing on conviction and Dems aren't.

This is a direct result of the increase in anti-vax disinformation, which has caused large, sustained outbreaks in the country over the last year.

This point here is the exact problem with all "centrist" arguments. If I'm starting at center and negotiating with the right, any result is going to be on the right. It will never, ever be on the left. There is absolutely no point between zero and negative ten that is a positive number.
It desperately needs stronger leaders.

And that means it needs hardline progressive leaders. When you start from the moderate position, you have less room to negotiate.

And you end up getting less every time.

"The Appeasement Eight gave Republicans bipartisan cover, and established another point of leverage Trump has over Congressional Dems...in a rapidly backsliding democracy, harm is happening no matter what. Therefore, preventing authoritarian consolidation is the most harm-reducing move."

Yep:
I wrote about the "Appeasement Eight" Senate Democrats getting the party to fold to Trump in the government shutdown, and why it shows that pro-democracy Americans badly need a real opposition party, full of leaders who recognize the United States isn't a normal rule of law democracy anymore.
Democrats Have to Get Out of a Normal Democracy Mindset
By folding in the government shutdown in exchange for virtually nothing, eight Democratic senators aid Trump's authoritarian takeover rather than oppose it

Wow: Per Hamdi's legal team, his only charge was a visa overstay — after Trump revoked his visa.

Despite DHS tweeting that Hamdi supported terrorism, they never charged him with any criminality.

In other words: Trump revoked a journalist's visa, so agents could arrest him for overstaying his visa.
NEW: British journalist Sami Hamdi is being released from US detention.

Trump administration agents detained him two weeks ago at the San Francisco airport — hours after he addressed an event, where he urged US leaders to take an “America First” approach rather than “Israel First.”

The BBC’s problem is not really impartiality, it’s understanding the relationship between impartiality and accuracy.

The two are paired in the BBC’s code. Due impartiality is paired with due accuracy. The BBC forgets this all too often, focussing only on impartiality and neglecting accuracy.
