NYT bestselling maker-upper of things. Still making things up. Still getting paid for it. No, it doesn't make sense to me, either. Former film guy. Toy enthusiast. he/him. Try to be a better person than you were yesterday.

Guess it's time to update the pinned post.

I'm Peter Clines. I write books. Some of them are very popular. All of them are fun in a sci-fi-horror-speculative sort of way. The newest, GOD'S JUNK DRAWER, is out November 11th. I also post about other folks' books, movies, toys, and other stuff I enjoy
Geoff, what are you talking about? We've got at least another week. December's not until OH CRAP!!!

Thing is, we DID hear about it at his confirmation hearing.

Every single senator who voted to confirm Hegseth knew he held these views about the laws of war.

They voted to confirm him anyway.
Everyone should read this terrifying thread about Hegseth’s published views wrt war crimes. It’s pretty fucking radical …. We needed to hear about this in his confirmation hearing.
A chapter in Hegseth’s book is literally titled “More Lethality, Less Lawyers.”

It’s almost as if there were signs!

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

Remember when Amazon held a sale during Independent Bookstore Day in an effort to undercut indie bookstores?

We didn’t forget. Support local bookstores during Small Business Saturday and beyond.

Well, I'll be trying this...
Three evenings ago I read an article about using ice packs on the forehead to help beat insomnia. The original study was from 2011 IIRC. Apparently if you drop the temperature of your frontal lobe by a degree or so you trigger a cascade of sleepy time metabolic events.

It was Downey who coined the phrase in the LEVERAGE writers room “future episodes do not win out over present episodes”. Trust me, you’ll have more ideas. You’ll die full of them.
WRITING TIP, something simple but it catches many of us out: if you have a great/fun idea for your story, *use it now*.

Don’t save your ideas for some nebulous other story you might write tomorrow. I promise you’ll have more.

Break your story’s status quo. Go a step further. Use the big idea.

And I swear, once again, this is not dunking on kids. We are seeing this at all levels--even grad students. AI + social media has had a profound impact on how we think and process our world, and we can't stop to reflect on it, because billionaires keep hurling addictive tech at us.

When no humans have jobs, who exactly is going to, you know, pay money for goods and services?
The markets are staying afloat right now on the hope that AI will destroy American workers. What a bleak thing.

I wrote a character in a book once who was *less* racist and evil than Stephen Miller and my editor told me I was just being excessive and needed to cut a bunch of stuff.
Stephen Miller's evilness is so pronounced that if someone wrote a villain like him in a book the author would be told to tone it down. :/

PLANES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES was a *gigantic* movie from John Hughes (over three hours long) with numerous subplots, characters, setups and payoffs. And 83% of all that got cut to give it the current run time. But that also means 17% of it is still in there as weird fragments for... reasons?
what's the story behind it?
November 28, 2025 at 4:36 PM
Watched PLANES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES last night for the first time in... wow, maybe since it was in theaters?

It's a very odd movie, even more so if you know a lot of the story behind it. Even when you consider it as "an artifact of its time." I'm not sure I'd watch it again any time soon.
