i'm watching (almost) all of doctor who from the very beginning and I'll be collecting all of my thoughts in this megathread

i'm not going to post about every serial/episode, just whenever i feel like it
hmmm. if i were founding a new political party i'd probably set some foundational principles going in, rather than going along with whoever happens to show up to the first conference

As many have been saying for a while, sure seems like the “who could AI replace” question has the opposite answer to what the bosses expect
The numbers in here are hilarious.

Do you use AI on the job?
Execs: 87%
Managers: 57%
Workers: 27%

Planned investment by 2030: $5T
"Necessary" annual revenue to justify that spend: $650B
Current annual revenue: $50B
Three years into the generative-AI wave, demand for the technology seems surprisingly flimsy

rich dudes got freakier after butlers fell out of fashion, like say what you will about having domestic servants but clearly it was some sort of moderating force on old rich dudes having a fancy man follow you around saying shit like "oh dear sir, that wouldn't be very becoming"

one of these things is not like the others. the gov is cutting cash ISAs specifically to encourage investing in stocks and shares. £20k, £12k, whatever, but encouraging people to put their savings in stocks during a huge bubble is just gifting capital more bag holders
Huge respect to the papers for finding both an 88 year old worried about the tax bill on her 6 bedroom Kensington house and a 20 year old fretting about only being able to save £12k a year tax free.
Top work all around. These are not easy case studies to find.

Yikes, OpenReview had a bug that exposed the anonymous reviewers, authors, and area chairs. openreview.net/forum/user%7...

For those not familiar: it's a tool allowing running a double-blind review process (think HotCRP, EasyChair etc) except review comments and author responses are all public.

I know we're all focusing on the chat gpt thing but this is an absolutely insane way for the observer and also glinner to refer to an ecofacsist who believes that trans people were invented by jews to eliminate humanity and that mass bombing campaigns should happen for the enviroment.

Even Hilary Cass - who disgracefully called parents terrified that their trans kids would take their own lives if they were denied healthcare "shroud wavers" - didn't go so far as to call for a ban on puberty blockers.

I won’t say what I want to say but this is unethical.

You don’t put 7.3% of cancer patients on a treatment and leave the rest to see how they get on.

Trans healthcare is the only branch where this is allowed to happen.

Puberty blockers were the compromise and they’ve taken that away.
The trail will involve 220 children.

Meanwhile 3000 another children seeking health care for their gender dysphoria will be placed on an ‘observational’ study.

The old ‘watch and wait’ is how Alice was treated. Although this time there might be someone actually watching, this is not health care.🧵
Puberty Blocker clinical trials to begin
on the NHS

- The trial will involve around 220 children under 16
- Young people will “undergo intensive medical and psychological screening”, including Gillick competency evaluation
- Trial: Group 1 will get PBs straight away vs Group 2, 12 months later

Also seeing well-meaning posters writing about an 'immediate start' versus 'delayed start' wing of the trial. No-one is getting 'immediate start'.

The level of questioning, assessments, examinations and review panels before eligibility is HUGE. No-one has immediate start - don't use this phrasing
Already seeing some terrible takes on here about supporting science re the puberty blocker trial.

Science that is unethical & designed terribly, influenced by those who don't want us to exist, is never ever going to lead to useful outcomes.

& this trial will cause immense harm to participants.
