Secure in the knowledge that most things are too hard to have strong opinions on. Sadly in these polarised times, many people on social networks spend more time figuring out if you are "on their team or not" than engage in an exchange of ideas.
This is a great read. One item stuck with me most is the examination aroubd vallor's point - if you let AI write your papers you will be replaced by AI.

Intuitively it would be the opposite, where you would develop skills that complement rather than compete, but laziness is laziness, ai or no
Last term I tried an experiment: I walked into my Tech and Design Ethics class, admitted that I had *no idea* what to do about ChatGPT - so I would let them figure it out.

As in: their first project was to decide and write the ChatGPT policy for the class.

Here's what happened:

My proposal: as the first project, students groups would propose different policies for ChatGPT use in their final project, including radically restructuring the final project. Because things might have to change, deeply.

And then they would argue, and vote, and I would do whatever they said.

When 97% is 'no clear consensus', and 52% is 'the will of the people', it's time to face facts that Governments do what Governments want to do regardless of what their people actually want.

Just wondering @bencollins.bsky.social - what's the story behind these vox pop pictures? This exact picture has graced the onion for yonks, so at this point, like the canned laughter people, she might really be getting on in real age ....

The Rue Charles Baudelaire in Paris has undergone a major makeover, giving a safe space to children around their school. It is one of over 300 "rues aux écoles" in Paris, showing the success of their green city project.

Just in case, like me, you doubt this is real: it is, I checked.

Actual people thought this was a good idea, not some AI slop fakery to attract clicks.
Evidently there was an Auschwitz-themed float in a Halloween parade in Pennsylvania.

The float was for a Catholic school, and to their credit the church immediately disavowed it.

Thing is, I don’t think high school kids did this entirely on their own. I’m guessing parents had to be involved.

The thing I get: rich people trying to get richer by looking for opportunities, and not looking too far to the downsides.

The thing I don't get: mustache twirling evil such as actively dismantling news orgs, denying climate change, pretending you can talk to god.
