When a friend turn into a foe, you are at times out of good options. Of the available options, you pick the least bad one.
France and De Gaulle understod this, and they made sure they were beholden to none, to hold their own destiny.

Belatedly, the rest of Europe understands.
"both sides of the Atlantic should refrain from loose talk, be it about the diminishing credibility of the U.S. “nuclear umbrella” or about the desirability of new national nuclear options."

Yes, I'm sure Trump will listen to this sentiment! www.defensenews.com/opinion/2026...

Viggo Mortensen, Aragorn in Lord of the Rings among roles he's played, wrote a debate article calling for Europe to close the bases USA have in Europe and to sever financial ties to USA.

Considering all the sycophants Trump surrounds himself with, a guy that facepalms looks like a weak link that can be exploited.

Well worth reading this thread from Prof Jacob to get a feel for how top EU diplomats and politicians feel after the last couple weeks.

It isn't easy to disentangle from the USA, considering how embedded they've been since WW2. But it will happen now. Likely at pace as well.

Which is why people that use their solutions are exposed to grave risk. And that alone should make business leaders pause and think.
What if Google change the T&C - what does your shareholders have to say about that when your dividend suddenly falls through the floor?
There is no law preventing Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and Microsoft from deciding tomorrow that any solution their AI creates for you or your business belongs to them and you are required to license the answer or share the revenue you make from building it

I doubt there will be a "deal" over Greenland. Denmark won't forget what Trump has done and threatened with. Signing any deal in the wake of that would be to signal that the threats worked - and might make those who stood with Denmark reconsider next time it happens.

Because it'll happen again.
Trump doesn’t have allies. There are only obstacles and those who yield advantage to him. He is an albatross to every American who continues to work with Allies. Rutte, like the favorite uncle, keeps the child distracted, giving the adult family members space to work. www.bbc.com/news/article...

This is one hell of a speech.

Carney has the vision to which EU would do well to listen and consider.

The strong won't stay strong forever. So if we build like Carney proposes - the currently strong will eventually have to cave and join, on the same terms as everyone else.

I like it.
Canada's PM, Mark Carney, held a great speech about the new world disorder. Would have fitted perfectly in the spring of 2014. Now it's rather late but that he is still one of the first gives witness to the level of leadership we have had over the last decade.

For clarity.

We (Europeans) do not hate Usaians. We may have strong opinions on the USA *regime*, but we are generally able to distinguish between the population of a country, and its regime.
This man is talking about stealing a country at gunpoint from nations the US is allied with. Of course Europeans hate us. You would feel the same way if you were in their place. American voters put this man in power, he didn’t seize it this time.

If Musk picks a fight with O'Leary, he has his work cut out for him. O'Leary isn't afraid of Musk and he won't pull his punches.

Disclaimer: I don't like O'Leary either because of how he treats the airplane staff and the shady salestactics of RyanAir.
"Musk has suggested he could buy Ryanair and called for its chief executive to be fired amid a deepening spat between the pair. The budget airline branded the Tesla chief an 'idiot', and used the extraordinary row to promote its Jan sale."

"Speak" is being very, very, VERY, generous towards Trump.

It's much more likely he'll meander, make random noises, lose the thread, harp on endlessly about something completely irrelevant and then whine - again - how Norway is unfair not giving him the peace price as he's ended 37 wars.
Trump is scheduled to speak in Davos at 8:30am ET.. the flight takes 8-8.5h.. he will be delayed.

Expect this to start happening more and more. Once the notion that USA is "bad debt" starts rolling, it snowballs. This may even have been the thinking for a while, but none wanted to be the first to openly say it. Trump's noise about Greenland provided the impetus for Denmark to not hold back.

A *very* valid point Brask makes.

"Erratic" and "mad" are two adjectives apt for the situation at hand. I'd probably opt for "bat-shit insane" personally, but Brask is trying to be diplomatic and I don't have to be.
Danish Parliament Deputy Speaker Lars-Christian Brask: If I could come with some advice, it would be for the Senate and House to start to take control of political power... With this erratic and mad behaviour, you have to ask... Is the President capable of running the US?

one of the most effective weapons we have against fascism is mockery, especially when its really funny
It occurs to me all the yelling at ICE in MPLS isn't merely funny. Getting made fun of like this is awful for morale. ICE is losing field officers faster than it can wave them through training, and a big part of it is how little of this these little weasels can take.

I am in agreement that ACI seems to be made for exactly this.

However, if we can achieve the same outcome and still have the bazooka unfired - it may give the idiots pause for thought.

EU should nullify the agreement from last year, sell some US debt and kick X out of EU. And if Trump whines...

Thought.

The €93Bn retaliatory tariffs will likely have limited, or no effect. It sends a message, sure, but it won't solve the problem. It'll make Trump irate and we'll have 150% tariffs applied across the board against EU and UK.
