but does it feel like they’re on a glide path to successful authoritarian consolidation anymore? I submit that it does not

It can still be turned around, but at the moment this is a society that is choosing to wither away through a combination of NIMBYism and xenophobia (two sides of one coin, imo).

The factional grifters will hate this, but the Mamdani-Spanberger-Sherrill axis actually suggests the outlines of a broad, emerging Dem coalition organized around both anti-Trump *and* affordability politics, not a party bitterly divided against itself.
These big wins will embolden Dems to take on Trump's lawbreaking and show there's a price for GOP enabling of him. Folks hate to hear this, but normal patterns are asserting themselves: Liberalism isn't dead, Rs are likely to lose in 2026, and Trump is really unpopular, not a magical exception.

Republicans thought they had a permanent hold over young men. They didn't.

Spanberger wins men 18-29 by 14%, Sherrill by 10%, and Mamdani by a stunning 40%.

Reminder: it’s ok to feel good about good results on an election night. You don’t have to worry that you’re jinxing something or that there’s no time to celebrate. Revel in the victories when you can, you can roll up your sleeves and get back to work tomorrow.

Despite most the country finding this kind of gutter racism abhorant political elites have created an epistemic bubble that convinced them it will win in New York of all places.

Utterly fascinating.
Eric Adams, endorsing Cuomo: "New York can't be Europe, folks ... Those Islamic extremisms that are burning churches in Nigeria, that are destroying communities in Germany, that have taken over the logical thinkings. And that's what I'm fighting for."

No. I’m sure a lot of what I want won’t happen. But I’m ready for someone who’s willing to actually fucking try rather than tell everyone why trying is pointless and must be saved for an undefined later moment

the crowd sizes are obviously the highlight here but the fact that *this* is the public statement of the NYPD does not bode well for the regime. or, put another way:

I do not regret to inform you that we are going to win
ZERO arrests at No Kings in NYC. (And the NYPD isn’t notorious for being sympathetic with people anti-Trump.)

This proves what shameless liars Speaker Mike Johnson & Karoline Leavitt are to slander the participants as violent anarchists.
