I grew up middle middle class and now debatably am upper middle class and thrift—specify alt thrift stores—was/is a huge part of our life.
Like, other than clericals and shoes I don’t think I’ve bought a new article of clothing in four years.

My god. I grew up lower middle class and thrift was just a normal part of life.
And most stuff I consume has gotten much better since then. I have what feels like a higher standard of living now as a grad student on a rather lower inflation-adjusted budget than what my family had when I was a kid.

Cutting coupons and buying generic are not indications of "living below the poverty line" and the fact that people think this is due to their brains being cooked by social media content which distorts perceptions of what a middle class existence actually is

Andrew Root makes the great point that one place neoevangelicalism and the counterculture of the 60s converged was thinking there was a “The Society” they could set up a parallel society against, but the problem is there is no a “The Society”
the problem is that it’s not true that it’s actually a parallel society. the people who liaise with mainstream society hold the power. this means real power dynamics. pretending that the countercultural stuff erases that actually *gives more power to the privileged*

I gotta say, in looking at a number of Spiritual Direction resources that seek to distinguish it from discipleship work or spiritual "coaching," there seems to be a lot of splitting hairs and unhelpful distinction of "thinking/reflection" in order to provide job security for spiritual directors. 🕯️

You're just not supposed to do that. You're not allowed to gas peaceful protests. You're not allowed to gas kids. It's not how things are supposed to go. There ought to be consequences for assaulting people like that. But I have no idea if there will be.
