Techbros seem to love Tolkien, so here's an analogy to help you understand what genAI is.

GenAI is The One Ring. You think your use is justified, b/c you don't have evil in your heart.

But it came from evil, it is intended for evil purpose, & anything you do with it will be twisted to that end.

Well this was bloody inevitable! Reassurance-seeking is the most pernicious thing for OCD and precisely the thing OCD wants you to look for. Being given it on tap by ChatGPT is a terrible fucking idea, do not do it. @psalkovskis.bsky.social

95%!
Can you think of anything else that 95% of the British public would agree on? We can't even agree whether to put the cream or the jam on first...
🚨 The UK government just published a breakdown of the responses to its consultation on AI & copyright:

- 95% of respondents want AI companies to pay for their training data (made up of 88% saying strengthen copyright law, & 7% saying leave it as is)

this field biologist does a great job highlighting the insidiousness of AI editing

these one-click AI edit buttons are incredibly appealing to many photographers, amateurs and professionals alike, and are framed as innocuous

this is worth sharing and educating people about

Perversely, I'm seeing a lot of postings for copywriter positions via Linkedin, Indeed, etc. -- but they're almost all part-time and/or contract jobs writing copy for AI training purposes. They want people to sign up to train their own shitty replacements.
When the AI boom began, copywriters were singled out as one of the jobs most vulnerable to AI. Now, three years later, I wanted to hear from workers on the frontlines of the industry, to hear what had actually taken place on the ground.

For many, it was even worse than they'd feared.
"I was forced to use AI until the day I was laid off." Copywriters reveal how AI has decimated their industry
Copywriters were one of the first to have their jobs targeted by AI firms. These are their stories, three years into the AI era.

For his ridiculous suggestion that laid-off gamedevs turn to ChatGPT for emotional support!

This has to be the most reckless thing Disney has ever done with their IP and I cannot wait for them to figure out what a bad idea this is.
BREAKING: Disney is making a $1 billion investment in OpenAI, and will allow its iconic characters to be on the company's Sora AI video generator.

Check out this nonsense: "We know many fans want us to take a defined position on geo-political events. But the only way the Eurovision Song Contest can continue to bring people together is by ensuring we are guided by our rules first and foremost."

OK, so where's Russia then???? Be so real.

So annoying that companies that promote GenAI and LLMs called it AI and didn’t differentiate it from the advanced machine learning algorithms and tools that enable so many great things that are also AI but actually solving a problem, and good.

This rules. It sucks that landlordism means most folk have to live in sterile magnolia boxes and the least you can do if you have the power to shape your space is go wild with it rather than decorating for the real estate listing decades before you even plan to move

Love to see the Sedgwick County Zoo putting out a good explainer on why GenAI slop videos of animals are a problem & how to identify them! It’s succinct, easy to read, and doesn’t shame people for not knowing better. A+ useful link to share with family and friends.

The Reality of AI Animal Content – Sedgwick County Zoo
If you spend any time on social media, you’ve probably seen them – bears bouncing on trampolines, apes caught on doorbell cameras, or “rescued” wild animals acting in ways that seem too good to be…

if you're into AI "advisors" and find their insights helpful, may I non-ironically recommend seriously considering: tarot

- connection to your subconscious
- therapeutic or confessional as need be
- patterns of meaning
- self-determined takeaways
- no need to google facts afterwards

Thing is this isnt about logic versus illogical. Its about bravery and cowardice. Opposition and collaboration. Principles versus selling out.
So, yes, they have decided to exclude a minority of their members so as to continue to provide a service for the vast majority of their members, and it sucks, but it's not hard to see why they made that decision or to understand the logic behind it

It's easy for me to say this but I do think both they and the Guides should have fought this. And IANAL, but I don't think either organisation would have been in breach of the law.

(Of course, that doesn't mean SLAPP isn't expensive to fight, nor that there wouldn't have been other unpleasantness)
The Women's Institute has been forced into excluding trans women too
"Not doing so would leave us at risk of costly legal challenge and potential regulatory action from the Charity Commission. We have a public duty to ensure our charity is not in breach of the law."

5. Jeopardising autistic people's wellbeing for an AI generated slop "publication" is morally repugnant.
