My very first essay has been published for @thewalrus.ca. When I was 11 years old I watched the watched the excellent Battlestar Galactica series. This show played a massive influence in my life. For the past two years I have been reflecting a lot about this series. And I wrote an essay about it.

We stand in solidarity with our @condeunion.bsky.social siblings at @teenvogue.com who were unceremoniously laid off last week.

Layoffs are not a solution to unbalanced budgets, especially when those laid off come from marginalized backgrounds typically not represented at major media orgs.

That’s a hell of a way to run a news organisation.

I worked 43 years in journalism, for a lot of news organisations, but I never encountered such political pressure being exerted by the top on news stories.

Stories with predetermined narratives that fit the leader’s personal views.

100% accurate. The Pittsburgh synagogue shooting will be in retrospect a clear moment when the rise in Islamophobia spilled over into antisemitism.
By the by, I'm not sure you get the slow upswing in blatant antisemitism/groyperism on the right without the broad mainstreaming of blatant Islamophobia during the Bush and Obama eras. The xenophobic image of the Anti-Christian Other was always going to extend to American Jews

I went a bit meta with this month's Women of Action column to talk about what it's like to watch a movie with "strong female characters" when you don't exactly trust that the director actually loves strong women
